Orense got knocked out of the Copa Ecuador after penalties against Nueve de Octubre. The visitors got a player sent off early on in the game, meaning that Orense were playing in a 4-2-3 and 4-3-2 for the majority of the game. Orense were on the back foot, but still managed to equalize with ten men against Nueve de Octubre. The hosts were dominating, but failed to create a lot of chances and lacked quality in the final third.

Steeven Quiñónez

  • Nationality: Ecuadorian
  • Age: 21
  • Date of birth: 19/02/2001
  • Club: Orense SC
  • Career: Orense SC, Atl. Mineiro (ECU, L), Baldor Bermeo (L), Orense
  • Position: Central Defender
  • Secondary position: Right-Back
  • Preferred foot: Right

The Ecuadorian right-back had a solid defensive display in the match against Nueve de Octubre. Orense played in a low defensive block after the red card and were put under high pressure, especially because Orense tried to build out from the back from goal-kicks. Steeven Quiñónez often received the ball while being put under pressure and he did well to play powerful passes into the attack. Most of them were pretty accurate and he showed that he has a decent ground passing technique. The young defender generally preferred to play long aerial passes towards the striker. He executed his long passes relatively well, considering that he does not have a great long passing technique. Going forward, Quiñónez generally seemed to lack technical refinement in the small spaces. He did not like to join the attack and does not have good dribbling ability.

Defensively, he got into many duels near his own penalty box. In all of his defensive duels, Quiñónez’s physical ability stood out. He heavily relies on his strength to win duels and uses his hands to push his opponent off the ball. He sometimes risks giving away a foul doing this. Quiñónez looked dominant and strong in aerial duels as well, always committing to the duel and giving his all to win the duel. The Ecuadorian youngster has good speed and this helped him to cover spaces in his back. He never lost a sprinting duel and did well to hold off his opponent by putting his body between the ball and opponent. He made one mistake defensively this game, and this immediately led to the goal for Nueve de Octubre. He was not close enough to the right central defender of Orense and Cortez of Nueve de Octubre made good use of that space to make a run and eventually score.

Rating – A2

I think that Steeven Quiñónez should not go forward as a right-back. He is listed as a central defender on Transfermarkt, which is not always true, but I see him as a central defender in the future. He is very strong in the 1v1’s, is good in aerial and ground duels and lacks technical refinement going forward. I definitely can see him as a central defender.

I also watched Erick Plúas, but as Orense played in a low defensive block this was not quite his game. He did not see much of the ball but battled well in defence, working hard and doing his best to cover a lot of ground. I just thought it wasn’t interesting to write about his game, especially because I already covered him plenty of times and not much has changed about him.
