Modibo Sagnan (Real Sociedad) – Scout Report

Modibo Sagnan is a 23-year-old central defender. I’ve seen him play for CD Mirandés, Real Sociedad and CD Tondela and he was impressive at all clubs in the minutes that I saw him. He already has a lot of experience at the highest level having already played 43 matches in the Portuguese and Spanish leagues. He was also part of the French Olympics squad for the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

The 1.87 meters tall central defender has a muscular build. Despite having such a tall frame, Modibo Sagnan is very athletic. He has good acceleration and recovery speed over long distances. Sagnan often beats attackers by pace and can defend in a high defensive line. The French youngster is pretty agile and turns quickly.

Modibo Sagnan is very strong in physical ground duels. He likes to step up and can overwhelm his opponent with his power in the duels. Sagnan has long legs, which also helps him to recover possession at times when the opponent tries to put his body between the ball and Sagnan. The French defender closes gaps towards the wing well, using his athleticism, and does not panic when he needs to defend with space in his back.

The defender generally reads the game well, proactively stepping up and not doing this blindly. However, sometimes when the opponent is dangerous on the counter-attack, he tends to watch the ball too much and this sometimes leads to Sagnan being out of position.

On the ball, Modibo Sagnan is really composed. The French youth international has a good passing range. His good long passing technique helps him to cover a lot of distance with his passing. Occasionally, when being put under pressure, his technique can be slightly inconsistent. He always tries to go for the forward option when the space is there and his passing is very secure and good.

Modibo Sagnan still makes an occasional mistake, which is probably the reason why he is allowed to leave Real Sociedad. However, Sagnan is very strong physically, has good athleticism and is really composed on the ball. He has the potential to become a regular starter for a mid-table team in the top 5 leagues and fits the Eredivisie really well.
