Charles Sagoe Jr is a right-footed English-Ghanaian left winger born in 2004, playing for Kalmar FF in the Swedish 1st Division, loaned from Arsenal FC. This season he has recorded 3 goals & 8 assists in 16 games so far.

Stands at 170 cm with an athletic, slender build, and despite not carrying much muscle mass, he’s got a strong upper & lower body that enables him to withstand challenges without generally being outmuscled. Defenders find it difficult to knock him down given his high balance (2nd in fouls suffered- Allsvenskan). He possesses a sharp acceleration & change of pace; his footwork, agility and coordination make him unpredictable both in tight & wide spaces. Given his height, he’s weak in aerial duels, often trying to disturb the opponent’s execution rather than properly contesting it. His stamina is fairly good, as he is used to playing full matches without a noticeable dip in the closing stages.

In possession, he operates as a left-winger in a 4-2-3-1 formation, although he can also play as a striker/2nd striker or even as a right-winger. He is comfortable on his weaker foot, which is a major asset in tight spaces, carrying, shooting, or crossing. With a low centre of gravity, he possesses aggressive & sharp outside-in ball carrying, always taking on & pinning the defender. He tends to cut inside looking for either a shot, an in-swinging cross, or a link-up inside the box (1st in key passes-Allsvenskan), although he can also dribble towards the outside looking for a cross with his left foot. Slick on ball, he turns away from tight areas with ease & uses his touches efficiently to escape pressure. He should exploit his pace more often as he isn’t a runner in behind. He prefers receiving to his feet out wide with an open body shape to set and play forward, possessing a well-orientated first touch with both feet. He can also drop inside to receive between the lines, and eventhough not being dominant in back-to-goal play, he offers sharp lay-offs & shields the ball effectively under pressure. When dropping down, his sharp agility & clever use of his body allow him to feint & turn away, escaping pressure to initiate the attack. He is a dangerous dribbler, not only because of his technique, but also because of his direction & pace changes in a split second. Sometimes he misreads where to orientate the attack, failing to exploit free space & heading to overloaded areas. He needs to exploit his traits in order to craft better shooting positions, occasionally rushing shots in low prospect situations. His shooting technique is fairly good, often opting for a powerful shot rather than a curler. He isn’t a clinical finisher & tends to adopt a passive approach towards crosses, waiting for a mistake or for the ball to reach him rather than aggressively attacking the ball, as he needs to offer more end product in the final third. He occasionally over-relies on his dribbling ability, taking unnecessary risks in his own half after recovering rather than playing a safe pass.

Off possession, Sagoe displays a fairly high work rate pressing. Although sometimes adopting a passive approach lacking aggression, he anticipates pressing triggers well & activates himself fairly quickly after losing the ball. He is diligent when tracking back, without lagging behind & offering constant support to his full-back. However, in the closing stages of games his defensive recovery can be delayed. It’s common to see him arrive surprisingly from behind, recovering possession frequently this way. In mid/low block defensive phases, he defends functionally following the defensive structure. He isn’t reliable when defending corners or long balls given his limitations in aerial duels.

Mentally, he shows a quiet temperament. Despite being frequently fouled, he keeps his composure, avoiding frustration or confrontations with opponents. His decision-making & decision speed are fairly good. However, he needs to avoid taking unnecessary risks, especially when in his own half. Occasionally, he also rushes shots or crosses rather than maturing the attack.

Sagoe Jr is a versatile winger capable of playing across the entire frontline. He is direct, combining top-tier speed & agility with high technical quality when taking on defenders, creating chances and finishing, making him one of the standout players in the Allsvenskan despite playing for a newly promoted side. His traits shine brightest in open & transitional games, though he‘s also comfortable operating in tighter spaces & against low blocks. He still has areas to improve, mainly his aggression when attacking space and the box, as well as his aerial game & end product. His contract expires in June 2027, so he represents a great market opportunity for top-half Championship or mid-table Bundesliga clubs. An intermediate step in the Eredivisie could also be smart. He has potential to establish himself as a winger in the T5 leagues.
