Eric Izoita is an 18-year-old central midfielder who is currently playing for Portland Timbers 2 in the MLS Next Pro, which is the third tier in the United States football system. In the 25/26 season, he was signed from the Portland Timbers academy to the Portland Timbers reserve team, Portland Timbers 2. In the 2026 MLS Next Pro season, he currently has 5 goals and 2 assists in 20 appearances, and has made one appearance for the first team.

Standing at approximately 6’0″, his stocky upper body allows him to win physical battles and drive through challenges. His top speed is below average modern midfield standards. He tends to rely more on anticipation and positioning rather than top speed but shows decent speed over short distances. He thrives in tight spaces because of his quick footwork and excellent balance. His low center of gravity and quick-twitch movements when dribbling allow him to navigate through compact midfield blocks. His solid core and upper body strength allow him to hold off challenges well, drive through contact when dribbling, and shield the ball effectively. He lacks the endurance to sustain 90 minutes at the required intensity, and his work rate noticeably drops after 60-70 minutes. He engages in physical contests and pressing situations when required but is neither aggressive nor overly cautious in midfield duels.

In possession, Izoita is a box-to-box midfielder who is often willing to dribble past one or two opponents to advance play, drop deeper to receive the ball from the defensive line, and take shots from distance when space opens up. During initial stages of build-up, he takes up central standard positions and supports the backline adequately. He tends to scan reasonably well before receiving but can be caught looking in one direction under pressure and miss blind side threats. He controls the ball adequately in most situations and can orient the ball forward or into space but can be slightly heavy under pressure. Under pressure, he uses subtle touches and body feints to evade presses and maintains close control in tight spaces. Izoita remains calm in crowded areas and uses his body well to protect the ball and draw fouls. He possesses elite variety and range in his passes, playing quick short combinations, clipped balls over the top, and incisive through balls with his left foot. He tends to make good decisions of when to hold the ball or when to accelerate the tempo, and exploits space with well-timed through balls. He is a potent ball carrier with excellent use of skill when dribbling, maintaining close control at speed and regularly progressing the team into the final third. Izoita combines technical flair with tactical intelligence, finding subtle runs and executing imaginative through balls, making him a dangerous creator in transition.

Out of possession, he balances forward tendencies with defensive screening. He screens reasonably well but sometimes drifts too high, leaving gaps in the defensive structure. He generally reads the game well enough to maintain position and make occasional interceptions, but his anticipation drops when opposition play in high tempo or quick rotations. He applies pressure in advanced areas and reacts to obvious cues such as back passes or bad touches. When defending in 1v1s, he tends to dive in too early or stand off too far, allowing attackers to run past him with ease. He tends to track back and help the defensive shape, but his recovery runs are sometimes a step slow.

Izoita has proven to be a box-to-box midfielder with excellent use of skill when dribbling and a creative presence in the midfield. His timing and vision in tight spaces make him an effective line breaker in the build-up and in transitions. With further development in his stamina and his 1v1 defending, he can become a starter in a sub-top team in a top 9-15 league. He would fit well in a 4-2-3-1 as a box-to-box midfielder in a double pivot in a possession-oriented system. His current level is starting in a mid-table team in a top 16-20 league with potential to play in a top 9-15 league.
