Eric Preston is an 18-year-old winger from Ventura County, the reserve/B-team of LA Galaxy in the US. He’s in the middle of a breakthrough season, having produced 6 goals and 4 assists in 19 games. Preston has also picked up caps for the US youth national teams at U17 and U18 level, scoring at both.

Physically, Preston stands around 175 cm and has a slender, lean build typical of a fast winger. He’s not the strongest player on the pitch, and it shows in duels — he’s beaten fairly easily both in the air and on the ground, even in a league that generally lacks physically dominant players. Building more strength for these battles is a clear area for improvement. What he does have is serious pace, and he uses it well both on and off the ball. He’s especially explosive over the first few metres, which lets him regularly get in behind the last line. His first touch, though, is inconsistent — moments of real quality mixed with sloppy control, and that’s another area with room to grow.

Technically, Preston dribbles well and generally keeps the ball close to his feet. His 1v1 ability is solid, though I’d like to see him take players on more often. When the ball comes in from the left-back with the opponent set defensively, he tends to play it back rather than turn and run at his man — given his dribbling and pace, I think he could try this far more often. Preston’s short passing is decent, but his long passes can be inconsistent, as can his crosses.

In possession, his shooting is a real strength. He’s comfortable finishing with either foot, which opens up a lot of options in the box. Almost all his shots come from inside the penalty area, since his speed usually gets him that far. His decision-making — when to shoot versus when to pass — could still use some sharpening, as could his overall output. In one-on-ones with the goalkeeper, he tends to stay composed, which is a real asset for a player this quick. He still lacks power for shots from distance and rarely attempts them, generally preferring to shoot from just outside or inside the box. Preston has a good awareness of his teammates’ positioning and finds them well with through balls and passes inside the box, but his crossing needs work to make his overall play in possession more dangerous.

Out of possession, Preston works hard and drops in to help defensively when needed, even though it means covering a lot of ground to get back into counter-attacking position. At times he still seems to hesitate over whether to press inside or outside. In the press, his speed and work rate make him a real asset — he doesn’t win the ball back often, since he’s often physically overmatched, but he consistently disrupts the opponent’s defensive shape.

Overall, Preston is a fast, agile, goal-minded left winger who — thanks to his two-footedness — can fill any position in the front three. His pace is the most dangerous part of his game, and the goals he’s now scoring for Ventura County make him a player worth tracking, including for European clubs. Leagues where speed translates directly into danger, such as the Czech Republic or Serbia, could suit him well down the line. For now, though, the priority is finishing the season with Ventura and hopefully earning minutes with LA Galaxy’s first team to keep developing. If he can raise his end product and build physical strength — both for his shot and in duels — Preston has real potential to take the next step.
