Alie Conteh (2004) is a right-footed striker from Sierra Leone who plays for Inter Turku in the Finnish 1st division, on loan from Norwegian side Strømsgodset IF. So far this season, he has recorded 15 goals and 5 assists in 36 games across all competitions, including a cup-winning goal in the Suomen Cup final. He has represented Sierra Leone at senior level 8 times.

Standing at 1.82 m, he possesses an athletic mesomorphic build, carrying some muscle both in his lower and upper body. Despite not being physically imposing, he’s strong enough to hold off shoulder-to-shoulder challenges and to shield the ball effectively. Conteh displays a great leap and jumping reach that turn him into a valuable asset in direct play, acting as a reliable target man. He has decent agility to turn and sharp acceleration over the 1st few meters, able to maintain it over longer distances thanks to his powerful stride. He shows a good level of coordination and balance in his actions.

In possession, Conteh usually operates as a target man in a 4-3-3 formation, but can also drop to the left flank and act as an inverted forward. He possesses a sharp 1st touch & ball control, being able to keep the ball close to his feet, although at times it can be a bit heavy if he’s under intense pressure. He drops down to receive with his back to goal, displaying a wide range of technical resources (feet, thighs, chest, head) to accurately control/lay-off, drawing defenders out of position and creating space in behind for the wingers. He can also turn and set up play for the wingers with a functional mid/long-range distribution, often scanning his surroundings but at times missing an optimal body shape. He is capable of contesting and winning aerial balls even against taller/stronger defenders thanks to his leap, timing, and anticipation, creating separation and positioning himself on the defender’s blind side. He excels at shielding the ball, making contact with his marker and holding him off. Conteh helps link up play in tight spaces across all areas of the final third, offering fairly good short passes, and despite not having extraordinary vision, he’s able to find teammates in dangerous positions inside the box. He possesses a simple but effective short-distance dribble to beat defenders, making use of his change of pace, but he lacks creativity and dribbling resources to be a threat in 1v1s, which occasionally limits him when looking for dangerous shooting positions and makes him less self-sufficient. Conteh is powerful in attacking space with his ball carrying, shrugging off opponents and maintaining balance, and displays a great ability to get back on his feet once he’s thrown down. However, runs in behind remain an area for improvement, as he doesn’t make the best use of his physical capacities and at times lacks the aggressiveness and determination needed to exploit space.

Intelligent in his off-the-ball movements to appear between the lines and inside the box, he creates enough distance with defenders to be able to receive/finnish unmarked. He reads crosses’ trajectories well and is particularly threatening when attacking the far post, showing a powerful header. He shows a wide range of finishing resources, capable of scoring from volleys, first-time strikes, or headers. He possesses good shooting technique from short to mid-range, being less threatening from long-range. His shots can lack placement at times. Conteh also has a strong weak foot, able to effectively use it for controlling, passing, carrying, and shooting.

Off possession, he displays functional mid-to-high pressing. He often guides and forces play towards one side to reduce space and options for the opposition build-up, but tends to lack intensity and aggressiveness when applying pressure. Despite his passive approach, he can react to pressing triggers whenever he “smells danger” from a bad control or pass. When pressing, he can also lack the awareness to correctly cover passing lanes, allowing play through to the central space. He reacts quickly upon turnovers, being willing to recover the ball asap. He displays decent low-block defending, able to hold the team’s shape at most times and being a counter-attacking threat if recovering. His defensive efforts tend to decrease due to fatigue during the closing stages of matches. He displays good spatial awareness to pick up second balls from clearances.

Mentally, he appears resilient. Although his decision-making is fairly good, at times he can misread attacking situations, attempting shots when there’s a better passing option, and vice versa. His decision speed and execution are reasonably quick, although he can become complacent and take more time than needed at times. He’s calm & composed on the ball and a combative player who doesn’t hesitate to discuss and complain to the referee.

In conclusion, Conteh is a striker with good physical traits who excels at back-to-goal play and aerial ability. He is a reliable finisher and at linking up play. His off-the-ball pressing and 1v1 dribbling remain areas for development, as well as his attacking runs in behind. Well-suited for a target man or roaming striker role, he would fit into different styles, whether direct or more possession-based. I believe he has the potential to be a starter for a mid-table team in a T6-8 league.
