Matias Siltanen is a right-footed Finnish central midfielder born in 2007 who plays for Djurgården in the Allsvenskan and, at just 19, has already made nearly 120 senior appearances. Formed at Finnish club KuPS, he has represented Finland at youth level. He has not suffered any significant injuries so far in his short career.

Standing at 175 cm, he is physically lightweight, although his musculature has developed significantly over the last year. He is aggressive and can compete reasonably well in both ground and aerial duels, but given his height and physique, he is not dominant in this regard. Not particularly fast, Siltanen displays excellent coordination and balance in his play, although not particularly agile in his on-the-ball moves, which occasionally limits him in the final third. He presents no stamina issues, usually playing the whole game.

In possession, he usually plays in a two-man midfield as the deepest-lying midfielder. Siltanen has a high influence in the build-up and possesses a strong short pass, usually delivering safe passes, although he knows when to be incisive with line-breaking passes. He displays an exceptional passing range, dictating play from deep and is capable of switching play accurately from side to side across all areas of the pitch or launching counter-attacks. Particularly dangerous are his diagonal or vertical passes into the box from the final third. He is intelligent in offering passing lanes, frequently managing to receive the ball without excessive pressure, whilst controlling his range of action well (scanning). Siltanen does not tend to slow the game down; he distributes the ball quickly over dribbling or carrying, as he can struggle to bypass pressure through dribbling when intensely pressed, or to progress the ball via carries, facing difficulties when holding off challenges. He tends to hold his position in attack, at most venturing to the edge of the box, possessing a decent long-range shot. He has also emerged as a good penalty taker (3/3).

Off possession, Siltanen has an exceptional tactical understanding of the game and spatial awareness, which allows him to win the ball back on countless occasions–whether by intercepting passes, anticipating, or through simple tackles. He is capable of covering long distances and presses aggressively forward, knowing when to step up and enabling him to win the ball back in more advanced areas. He is not afraid to commit fouls and is aggressive in aerial and ground duels, although his physical conditions disable him from being dominant. He remains composed in one-on-one defensive situations and tackles well, combining good timing with precise execution.

Siltanen’s perception and execution of actions is fairly quick, and the quality of his decisions is often elite, avoiding excessive risks without reward and knowing when to accelerate play. Resilient and combative, he possesses a calm but strong Scandinavian temperament, demonstrating leadership and unusual maturity in his play considering his age. He is already an important figure in Djurgården’s hierarchy.

In conclusion, Siltanen is a positional central midfielder who has proven to be a top-class midfielder for the Allsvenskan and is definitely ready to take the next step in his career, which I believe will happen this summer. Areas of improvement include his physical development and a greater ability to progress play through ball-carrying. I believe top-10 teams in either the Bundesliga or LaLiga would be appropriate destinations for him. He would suit Germany’s high-tempo and transitional play, as well as Spain’s technical quality and precision (and a slightly lower physical demand). His primary challenge will be adapting to a higher speed of the game and a more physically demanding environment.
