Kwon Hyeok-kyu played as an attacking midfielder during this match and was heavily involved in the opposition half, operating in front of the FC Seoul defence .

He has a strong physical structure (190 cm) that can give him an advantage in challenges, though he needs to take more advantage of this physical asset. With this strong structure he can protect the ball and offer an option in support by holding up the ball and bringing his teammates into play. His work rate without the ball is really high, he did not stop trying even if he did not receive a lot of ball, with his perpetual movement he allowed his team to be fluid in possession and keep the ball, whilst creating spaces for others.

He alternated his movement in support and in depth, he adapted his position in relation to the wingers, taking up positions in half-spaces or occupying a wide position to offer a passing option for the ball carrier and forming a triangle to facilitate the retention of possession in the opposition half. He offered freedom of play to the wingers who could vary their position to take the ball and could count on the positioning of Kwon Hyeok-kyu to provide an option. He was rewarded for his work rate, scoring the first goal of the match after a good pass from Lee Dong-gun. He did not see a lot of ball, but when he had possession he displayed good control, driving the ball forward to launch attacks.

His defensive contribution was mainly focussed in the FC Seoul half. In a defensive position, he could join Lee Jeong-hyeob to maintain this first pressure line. He could also leave this position to trigger the press when the team was holding a medium-high line, and he attacked the ball carrier to force him to rush his play with the ball. This energy permitted him to recover the ball in high positions. He has a strong physical structure that offers him an advantage on his play without the ball. Despite being quite tall, he offered little in the way of an aerial threat, and could improve upon this part of his game.

He’s a strong player with a lot of energy who can help the dynamic of his team. He had the ability to have more of an impact with the ball. Now having played a few matches with the team, as he gains more experience, he will find the rhythm to have as much of an impact without the ball as with.

Lee Dong-jun

Player profile:

  • Nationality: Korean
  • Age: 23
  • Date of birth: 01/02/1997
  • Current Club: Busan I Park FC
  • Career: Busan I Park FC (Y), Soongsil University (Y)
  • Position: Right Winger
  • Secondary Position: Second Striker
  • Preferred foot: Right

Lee Dong-gun played as a right winger during this match, though he varied his positioning to drift in from wide areas to cause problems for the opposition defence.

In this wide position on the right side, he could find 1v1 situations to create an advantage. To dribble and dominate space, he mainly utilised his speed and agility to surprise his opponent. On the right side, he did not try to cut inside with the ball, his run was mostly on the outside to find a passing or crossing position in the final third. He adapted his play, when he felt he could not take advantage of his opponents with his speed, he slowed down and dropped deeper to link up with teammates and to organize the attack.

He did not attack without thinking. He takes advantage with his movement, he made good runs without the ball to attack the defensive line and get unmarked to create danger. For the first goal, his good run at the right speed in behind the defence allowed Rômulo to find him with a good pass in the area, and as he received the ball he had the awareness to find Kwon Hyeok-kyu who scored. A few minutes later, he made another good run inside the area, he easily lost his man to find a position to score and give his team a 2 goal lead. This capacity to attack space wisely is a real threat for the opponents. His great agility and acceleration permit him to take advantage of his first touches to change speed and turn to attack the space.

He’s not a strong player who can rely on his physical strength but he makes defensive efforts, to close down space and offer support to the fullback. With his speed, he can cover large spaces quickly. His good reading of the game helps him to anticipate the movements of his opponents, and he compensates for this lack of strength with his anticipation to take advantage on his opponents. To compensate for his lack of strength, he can be a little too aggressive in physical challenges, he need to control this aggression and use it wisely to not commit avoidable fouls.

After 3 seasons in K-League 2, where the forward played 65 matches and scored 17 goals and made 13 assists. He was prepared for his first matches with the team in the K – League, and after a shy start, in the last 2 games he showed a good dynamic, scoring 3 goals and made 3 assists. Lee Dong-gun offers a lot with his energy and wise movements to take advantage and attack space. His qualities could make him, one of the talents to follow this season in K-League.

Rômulo played as a Central Midfielder, in this 4-2-3-1 system. He adopted this position during the match even if he mostly occupied the base of the attack to organize the play.

In the first stage of play, he dropped deep to occupy a position next to the centre backs or behind the first pressure line of FC Seoul, and he offered a direct option to hold the ball and organize the attack from deep areas. He dictates the tempo of the team, switching the play effectively. In attacking positions, he occupied the spaces between the lines. He showed high precision in his passing game, to keep the possession and dictate the tempo. With his good game vision, he made vertical passes to create danger, the good movement from the forwards allowed him to find them in the final third. With the precision of his left foot, he can influence the game in build up play, but also in set pieces, he was in charge of taking set pieces. At first, the best chances for the team came from set pieces.

He helped the team to flow in possession with his position and his capacity to play intelligently, he did not hold the ball too much and played at the right tempo. For the first goal, he showed his good vision and technical quality to find Lee Dong-gun in the area and allow the team to score the first goal of the match. In the last minute of the match after Kwon Hyeok-kyu left the field, Rômulo played in a higher position. He played as attacking midfielder, holding the position between the lines and maintaining the pressure with his capacity to hold the ball and exploit space in the final third to create danger. In a situation where he was in a 1v1 situation against the full back, he succeed in tricking the full back to open up space in the final third, and he found a crossing position.

In his defensive contribution, his good reading game helped him to adjust his position and intervene at the right time to cut passing lanes and recover possession (With 3 interceptions, he was the player with the second most interceptions during the match). He’s a small player who cannot rely only on his physical structure to dominate his opponents. He responded to physical contact when he had to, he succeeded in protecting and holding onto the ball. With his height, aerial battles are not an aspect where he can be dominant.

He’s an important player, he dictates the tempo for the team and his precise left foot allows him to be a real threat to create or find a killer ball. After a good performance in K-League 2, this season could be important for his future to attract attention and make a move to a higher league.
