Grêmio – Match Report vs. SC Internacional 13/03/20

Grêmio hosted Internacional in which was a very eventful Grenal derby. In the end, the eight men of Grêmio drew 0-0 with the eight men of Internacional. Grêmio lined up in a fluid 4-3-3 with attacking full-backs and two inside forwards. Matheus Henrique was the main man in the build-up and played as a deep lying playmaker. Internacional played in a 4-2-3-1 formation that often switched to a three at the back in possession. In this match, it could easily be seen that there was a lot at stake and that it was a very intense match, in which aspects as determination prevailed, rather than tactics. However, it was a very entertaining match.

Ratings

  • A1 – Very good, could play higher
  • A2 – Strong potential to play higher
  • B1 – Good, strong player at level
  • B2 – Potential to be strong player at level
  • C – Average for the level, rewatch
  • D – Below average in this match

Caio Henrique

  • Nationality: Brazilian
  • Age: 22
  • Date of birth: 31/07/1997
  • Club: Atlético Madrid
  • Career: Santos (Y), Atlético Madrid (Y), Paraná Clube (L), Fluminense (L), Grêmio (L)
  • Position: left-back
  • Secondary position: defensive midfielder
  • Preferred foot: left

Caio Henrique played as a left-back in this match and got sent off in the late stages of this match, after trying to kick his opponent in a brawl. In possession, he liked to support the final stages of the build-up by positioning himself higher up the pitch. He often positioned himself close to the sideline. Even though he positioned himself quite high up the pitch at times, he was not that involved and did not contribute to the attack that much.

When he was in possession in his own half, he often played long passes down the line whenever he got put under pressure. He should have played it short more often, especially with his passing technique and past as a defensive midfielder. Caio Henrique occasionally showed that he can play a good pass with his right foot as well, as he nearly assisted an Everton goal, after playing a very good through pass with his right foot. Still, he showed that he is comfortable in the tight spaces.

In defence, he defended positively which means that he liked to step out and defend aggressively far from his own goal. He most of the times succeeded in doing so. When he did not fully succeed, and his opponent tried to combine with his teammate by passing and immediately making a run forward, he changed his run slightly to block his opponent off. He showed good pace and acceleration and capable of recovering his own mistake when he gets dribbled past.

In the 1v1’s, Caio Henrique occasionally looked vulnerable as he got dribbled past quite often as his starting position was not optimal at times, which did not help as his opponent was very fast in the first meters. This allowed his opponent to reach the byline and get into the box. However, the Brazilian left-back did well at times to block crosses and his aggressiveness in the 1v1’s helped him to regain possession as his opponent did not like that.

Rating: A2

He is not ready for a team like Atlético Madrid yet, but could be a good Alex Telles replacement at FC Porto. I will rewatch a regular match in the Série A of him.

Matheus Henrique

  • Nationality: Brazilian
  • Age: 22
  • Date of birth: 19-12-1997
  • Club: Grêmio
  • Career: AD São Caetano, Grêmio (L)
  • Position: central midfield
  • Secondary position: defensive midfielder and attacking midfielder
  • Preferred foot: right

Matheus Henrique played as a left central midfielder and was the most important player of Grêmio in this match. In the first phase of the build-up, but also in the later stages, he was always in space and often made the right choice in possession. The Brazilian midfielder has an excellent technique, as his first touch is good and he can control the ball very well when he is dribbling. He has an excellent passing technique and seems very dominant on the ball. The 22-year-old is agile and gets past his opponents with ease. He liked to carry the ball, but only did this when he had the space to do so. In defence, he had moments in which he lacked discipline to cut passing lanes or to track back, while he also had moments in which he looked very determined and fired up to gain back possession.

Rating: A1

He played a very important part in the build-up of Grêmio, but he made a worse impression than he did at the Pre Olympics Tournament with Brazil U23. This could be explained as this is the Grenal derby. I will rewatch a regular match in the Série A of him.

Éverton

  • Nationality: Brazilian
  • Age: 24
  • Date of birth: 22-03-1996
  • Club: Grêmio
  • Career: Fortaleza (Y), Grêmio
  • Position: left winger
  • Secondary position: second striker, right winger
  • Preferred foot: right

Éverton played as a left winger and he impressed very much when he was on the ball. The Brazilian international showed incredible bursts of speed, had very good changes of directions and kept very calm and composed in the box. He was very comfortable in the tight spaces and showed confidence on the ball and in his movements. Éverton liked to cut inside to eventually switching the play to the right side. He could have done more out of possession to get into possession as he did not fully exploit his qualities in this match. In defence, he tracked back well and performed his defensive duties.

Rating: A1

Ready for the top 5 leagues in Europe, but I will rewatch a regular match in the Série A of him to determine which club would suit him.
