El Hadji Seck (KAA Gent) – Scout Report

El Hadji Seck is a 19-year-old Senegalese left winger who currently plays for KAA Gent in the Jupiler Pro League. This report is based on both his first professional season for Gent’s reserves (Belgian 2nd tier), as well as his recent performances for the first team, where he has primarily been used as a late impact substitute. In all competitions this season, he has played 7 games (109 minutes), scoring 1 goal.

Seck stands at around 1.76 m, which is a sufficient height for a winger, but he possesses a slim frame, which can make him vulnerable in physical duels. His athleticism, apart from his strength, is his most interesting aspect due to his nimbleness and low centre of gravity. He’s rapid, agile, and full of energy. He also has a good engine, capable of maintaining a high sprint speed over long distances following an explosive burst. As he is still only 19, his physical development will be worth monitoring.

For the first team, Seck has primarily been used as a substitute as either a left-sided #10 in the half-spaces in a 3-4-2-1, or as a left winger in a 4-2-3-1 during his time with the reserves last season. He has very occasionally been asked to drop deeper as a wing-back, but is less suited to do so, due to his lack of defensive anticipation and man-marking. Alongside his athleticism, dribbling is another standout aspect, complementing his physical profile well. He is eager to take on his man 1v1 with flair, although he often uses simple body feints and rarely overcomplicates his dribbles. His weaknesses in possession are his decision-making on the ball and his first touch, particularly under pressure or when running. He tends to overdribble, develop tunnel vision, or shoot in situations where a pass would have been the better option. Despite this, his close control while carrying is great. He doesn’t use his weak foot often, but it’s sufficient enough when required. His finishing is also a positive, as he can strike the ball with power and precision using both feet.

Off the ball, Seck regularly finds space between the lines quickly and times his runs well. He consistently holds tactical shape when playing in his natural attacking role, and is positionally disciplined. A weakness off the ball is that he can occasionally become static or lose focus, especially in later stages of the game. He’s an energetic presser and is able to intercept passes consistently. His self-control is great as he avoids making unnecessary fouls and always maintains his calmness.

Overall, Seck profiles as a rapid, agile, and high-volume dribbler who’s eager to take on his man and likes to cut inside from the left. His main weaknesses are his decision-making on the ball, first touch, and physical strength. If he maintains his current form and refines these weaknesses, I could see him becoming a regular starter for KAA Gent towards the end of the season. Given his current situation and limited first-team minutes at Gent, a move would be unnecessary at this stage.
