Massiré Sylla is a 21-year-old centre-back from Senegal who plays for Union Saint-Gilloise in the Belgian Pro League. He is right-footed and stands at 196 centimetres tall, with a slim ectomorphic build that carries good muscle in his legs, giving him a wide, well-proportioned frame without being bulky. Having come through Diambars FC’s academy in Senegal before a spell in France with Pau and then in Norway with Lyn, he made the move to Belgium in January 2026.
Sylla commits fully into his defending abilities, stepping into duels aggressively and putting his full power into challenges. He’s capable of a powerful sliding tackle, but he can occasionally mistime them and foul as a result. His balance of reactive and proactive defending is a strength, as he reads the game well enough to judge when to step in and when to hold his position. Sylla fights hard for every ball. He can throw himself into a tackle to clear danger from a difficult spot, and his positioning off the ball is excellent. Covering effectively for teammates in what is mostly a zonal defensive setup rather than strict man-marking. He’s vocal and organized, using his arms to direct teammates wide, point out where to run, or signal that he has an opponent covered on a potential cross. He holds off opponents well when they’re on his back, times his standing tackles nicely, and is a strong interceptor of the ball. He’ll also use a body feint to send a pressing opponent the wrong way when he’s under pressure himself. High balls under pressure are a slight weak point, and he can have issues with passes that bounce and go over him and the opponent.
Sylla is a genuine weapon at set pieces, reading crosses well and heading powerfully towards goal, making him a real threat in the opposition box. He can give a shot from distance, but he isn’t really good in that. During a build-up he stays active, looking for the ball and opening his body up well when pressed. He’s capable of going forward with the ball to progress the attack, even attempting an occasional line-breaking pass or long ball over the defence from his own half. However, his consistency could be better with them. He can also whip in a decent cross from deep on the right side. His decision-making under pressure is decent, staying relatively calm and quick to decide, but at times he opts to simply clear the danger rather than play out. His touch with high or medium balls could be better, while his control of low passes is already good enough with both feet. Technically, he’s an accurate passer, but not always the most incisive. He possesses a genuinely good weak foot for a centre-back, as he’s comfortable playing with his left even under pressure.
Sylla’s frame is lean, but far from lightweight. He has good muscle in his legs and a wide enough build to hold his own physically. He can jump very high off a short run-up, and even without one his reach remains really good. However, his height definitely helps him. He attacks the duels mostly from behind his opponent with hard intensity, sometimes drawing a foul in the process. His positioning ahead of aerial duels is strong taking his time to read the ball trajectory and he times his jumps well. However, he can mistime or misposition himself occasionally on both areas. He prefers to be positioned behind his opponent in the air and is willing to step out of his defensive line to contest a header if the situation calls for it. On the ground, he uses his chest and shoulder to push opponents off the ball. He doesn’t do it with overwhelming power but it’s effectively enough. He often uses his foot to help him out, trying to win the ball from the opponent directly. He can also force his way in front of an opponent through sheer strength. His speed is above average for a centre-back, accelerating quickly into his stride, and his agility is a real asset, moving smoothly for a player his size, though his balance can be up and down after physical contact.
Sylla brings good intensity to his defending, closing gaps quickly and putting real effort into every duel, whether that’s a tackle, a header, or simply closing down space. Even after tracking back from a set piece or a high press earlier in the phase, he shows good awareness to push back up the pitch again if he can. He remains composed with the ball at his feet under pressure, but he can sometimes prefer the easy option rather than the tougher pass. His decision-making is a good strength. It’s quick, mostly correct, and consistent, even if his passing under pressure could occasionally be better.
Massiré Sylla’s game is built around his aerial dominance and physical presence, backed by a defensive discipline that belies his age. He’s a genuine threat at both ends during set pieces, while his interceptions and covering positioning make him a reliable last line. Beside his defending abilities, he is really well in helping to move the possession further up the pitch and give good long passes. He still could improve in his handling of higher balls under control, which can look loose compared to the rest of his game. Also, the timing of his tackles is a weaker point, as his aggression sometimes tips into a mistimed challenge or lets a sharper opponent skip past him. None of that takes away from an already well-rounded package for a 21-year-old: a commanding, athletic defender with the tools to keep improving into a genuinely complete centre-back. With Burgess leaving, I predict that Sylla will become a starter for Union. Something he genially deserves.
