Kota Takai (Kawasaki Frontale) – Scout Report

Kota Takai is a 20-year-old Japanese centre-back who plays for Kawasaki Frontale in J1. He broke through as a regular player in 2023 and is now a nailed-on starter for Kawasaki. He has played once for Japan at the senior level, and 8 times at various age group levels.

Takai has an enticing physical profile. He’s 6’3 with a wide frame and he’s not overly slow for a player that big. However, his use of his size could improve. He does get pushed around a little bit when playing against strikers who are a similar size to him. When the ball is in the air a lot of strikers had success by bumping Takai or getting themselves between him and the ball to prevent him from winning the duel. On the offensive side of things, Takai seems to be a bit more consistent in duels. This seems to be because he’s a lot more comfortable when he can attack the ball compared to when he has to jump from a standstill. Takai is mostly solid in ground duels. He’s good at using his length to win the ball and for the most part, has a good sense of when to leave his position to win the ball. He does sometimes have some trouble when he has to turn quickly. He is also quite handsy, frequently tugging on opposition players or shoving them. I think at a higher level this could cause him problems, especially against faster players who can exploit his slow turning.

Takai has a lot of technical quality. He can pretty consistently slip out of pressure, use feints to disguise where he will pass the ball, and carry the ball forward. He doesn’t break lines too often but he can consistently play forward passes to players in wide spaces. However, all this being said, sometimes his decision-making is not the best. He puts his teammates in trouble with poor decision-making much too frequently. He has the technical ability to play good passes but there is also the chance that he’ll pass the ball to a player who’s under pressure right in front of his own goal. That’s something that must improve if he’s to make the jump to a higher level.

Takai has some serious flaws but his physical and technical qualities are naturally going to make him attractive to teams. He has also played a lot of minutes in a very strong league at a young age. These things seem like a recipe for a step up sooner rather than later.
