South Sudan U20 – Match Report vs Uganda U20 (26/02/2023)

In the 3rd match in Group B, we saw another fine showdown. A match in which everything was still at stake, from group win to possible elimination. It was a must-win for both, and that soon became clear. Uganda dominated much of the match but failed to capitalise on the many chances. South Sudan then managed to counter on their quarter on a few occasions on a counter or by playing well on ball loss. With 16 shots and 69% ball possession, it also quickly became clear in the statistics that Uganda was the stronger team. Jackson Mayanja’s team, which like its opponent started the match in a 4-3-3, often managed to create danger through the flanks. Something that soon stood out in their play.

Even though this was only the third match, for Godwill the tournament was successful even before this match. Not only did he manage to make several fine saves in quite a few matches, and put himself in the spotlight. He led his team as a key player to their first-ever victory in a CAF tournament. So in this match too, all eyes were logically back on him. Yet Godwill did not succumb to the pressure, again managing to keep the clean sheet despite numerous chances.

The first striking feature is that Godwill goes to the ground very quickly despite his big physique. He is very strong in stopping distance shots, the combination of quick diving and leaping power take care of that well. In terms of reflexes, it’s also good, he is very alert and involved in the game.

In the build-up to the game, he often has a much harder time. You soon see that Godwill is not comfortable on the ball. He therefore often opts for a long ball. This is not only true on stationary phases, even on a return ball he prefers to get rid of the hook as soon as possible. The fact that he does almost everything with his right foot does not help there either.

On a mental level, a lot of leadership qualities emerge. Something very often looked for in a modern goalkeeper. Godwill is a leader and helps ensure the proper positioning of his defensive line.

Rating – A2

Godwill is one of the revelations of this tournament, and that will not go unnoticed. A lot of teams have been watching this tournament, and then Godwill will soon be found on many lists. A move to a bigger league does not seem unlikely.
