Independiente del Valle and Barcelona SC faced each other in the Estadio Banco Guayaquil. They drew 1-1 in what was a very intense and entertaining match. Independiente del Valle set up in a 3-4-2-1 in the first half, but changed to a 4-3-3 in the second half with wide central defender Segóvia moving to the left-back position and Alan Minda moving from the left wing-back position to the right-wing position. Barcelona SC set up in a 4-2-3-1 formation and were often forced to having a more direct approach. Independiente del Valle created many chances through the creativity of Minda and Sornoza. They opened the score halfway the first half but Barcelona SC equalized quickly after a mistake by goalkeeper Ramirez. Ramirez made up for that mistake as he saved a penalty from Nixon Molina in the last minute of the second half.

Guillermo Rendón got his first start for Barcelona SC as he replaced the suspended Leonel Quiñonez in the starting line-up. The Ecuadorian left-back generally made a very insecure impression and did not look good throughout the match. He has a pretty small frame for a left-back and did not look super quick. Rendón had decent agility. The youngster often provided width for Barcelona SC in settled possession, but did not receive the ball that often. When he did receive the ball while sticking close to the sideline, Rendón had mixed results when trying to control the ball. He sometimes had a very bouncy touch and did not look good on the ball. Rendón seemed uncomfortable under pressure and was very wasteful in possession. He liked to play his passes down the line but did not often reach a teammate. His dribbling ability was pretty good, but he only showed this in one situation where he turned away from his direct opponent before putting in a cross.
Defensively, Rendón often stayed in the defensive line when Independiente del Valle were in possession. However, sometimes he was caught out of position as he positioned himself a few meters ahead of the defensive line. Rendón looked indecisive whether to close down the opponent that was in possession or to stay in the defensive line and mark the run by (in this case) Angulo. In these situations, he both allowed the opponent on the ball a lot of time and Angulo to make a run in behind. Rendón did not react quickly to changes of direction by his opponent and was very average in the 1v1 duels against Minda. He did do well to cover runs in behind from Minda and always worked hard and tracked back well. However, it was simply not good enough in this match.
Rating – C
Guillermo Rendón had a horrible performance for Barcelona SC against Independiente del Valle, but I am pretty hopeful that he will improve over time. I think he looked very nervous and did not play well at all.
