FC Volendam – Match Report vs Telstar (09/01/2022)

Leaders of the Dutch Keuken Kampioen Divisie, FC Volendam, faced Andries Jonker’s Telstar in their 21st match of the season in the Vissersderby. Wim Jonk sent his side out in a 4-3-3 with one defensive midfielder behind the other two central midfielders. Volendam started extremely poor and conceded after five minutes. Telstar’s striker Glynor Plet was left completely unmarked and easily headed in a corner at the near post. After 30 minutes FC Volendam replied another goal from a corner. This time it was Mike Eerdhuijzen, who was at fault when Telstar scored, who headed the ball in. Wim Jonk’s FC Volendam didn’t start playing a lot better after the equalizer. A few minutes later however, it was the individual class of Robert Mühren, who’s goalscoring record the past few years has been fantastic, that won them the game. The striker put pressure on Telstar defender Vandermeulen, dribbled into the box and managed to put the ball through the legs of the goalkeeper.

Denso Kasius

Player profile:

  • Nationality: Dutch
  • Age: 19
  • Date of birth: 06/10/2002
  • Current club: FC Volendam (On loan from FC Utrecht)
  • Career: Sparta (Y), Feyenoord (Y), ADO (Y), FC Utrecht, FC Volendam (Loan)
  • Position: Right Back
  • Secondary position: Left Back
  • Preferred foot: Right

Denso Kasius was one of the few bright lights of FC Volendam against Telstar. Like the rest of his teammates he made plenty of mistakes and didn’t play the match of his career, but there are a lot of aspects of his game to be excited about. Kasius played as the right back for Volendam and had a lot of freedom to go forward. He made a lot of overlapping runs on the right, but also felt comfortable to drive forward with the ball towards the centre of the field.

Kasius’ main weapon is probably his speed. He is very quick on the first meters and has a high top speed. Offensively this makes him very dangerous on the ball, or when making a run behind the defenders of his opponents. And defensively it allowed him to play a very high defensive line and helped him recover in his duels. The 19-year old was very sharp defensively overall. He did really well in his ground duels, where he was very patient waiting for the exact right moment to make his tackles. The 6’0” tall defender has quite a lean build, but didn’t have any problems in the more physical duels. Kasius worked very hard throughout the match and even made some long sprints forwards in the last minutes of the game, displaying some serious stamina.

Denso Kasius can be a real weapon for Volendam in possession. He is comfortable on the ball and can easily beat his man. He put in a couple of dangerous balls in the box, but was a bit unlucky with is crossing and decisions against Telstar. His distribution overall looked very good. He showed excellent passing range with a lot of switches to the left, through the air and over the ground, and played some good passes to the midfielders.

Rating – A2

I’m completely sure that after this season Denso Kasius can make a very nice step to a team in the Eredivisie. FC Utrecht could just be a step too high for next season, but if that’s the case another loan move would be good for him.

Gaetano Oristanio

Player profile:

  • Nationality: Italian
  • Age: 19
  • Date of birth: 28/09/2002
  • Current club: FC Volendam (On loan from Inter)
  • Career: Inter, FC Volendam (Loan)
  • Position: Central Midfielder
  • Secondary position: Left Winger
  • Preferred foot: Left

Gaetano Oristanio started as the right sided central midfielder. He moved towards the left for the last 15 minutes of the first half and played as right winger for a bit in the second half. Oristanio didn’t play a good match, but showed some glimpses of class. His highlight of the game came in the 29th minute when he almost scored with a spectacular bicycle kick after a corner. Telstar’s goalkeeper Ronald Koeman JR (yes he is the son of the Ronald Koeman), managed to tip the ball over the bar and the next corner was headed in by Eerdhuijzen for the equalizer.

Technically is where he showed a few times that he can be a really good footballer. He got out of some impossible situations with the ball beating his opponents, but he just wasn’t involved enough this match. Some of this comes down to Volendam’s very sloppy build-up play, but I also felt like he didn’t move around enough. There were a few moments where he dropped back or moved to the sideline to pick up the ball, but I can probably count them on the fingers of my hands. The 19-year old kept his passing quite simple and did fine like that, completing almost all of them. In the final third he could’ve done a lot better. After 70 minutes Oristanio found himself in a 2v1 situation with Denso Kasius on his right. His shot from outside the box went wide, which rightfully frustrated some of his teammates.

Oristanio is definitely more offensive minded than defensive, but worked very hard without the ball nonetheless. He made some very important tackles and regained possession for his team multiple times.

Rating – B2

There were a few moments where Oristanio looked very good, but I just didn’t see enough of him this match. He could be an interesting player, but has to do better than this. I’m curious how he will play when the team overall does a better job.

Filip Stankovic

Player profile:

  • Nationality: Serbian
  • Age: 19
  • Date of birth: 25/02/2002
  • Current club: FC Volendam (On loan from Inter)
  • Career: Inter, FC Volendam (Loan)
  • Position: Goalkeeper
  • Preferred foot: Right

The other Inter loanee of FC Volendam, Filip Stankovic, played a fine match. He didn’t really get tested against Telstar, but there were a few moments where he was alert. The 6’2” tall goalkeeper looked a little shaky in the air after a free kick, but managed to punch the ball away without a real jump. His goal kicks looked fine, but there were a few misplaced long balls when he was pressed by his opponents.

Rating – B1

It’s hard to say how good Stankovic is based on this match, but I will keep my eye on him.

Ibrahim El Kadiri

Player profile:

  • Nationality: Dutch
  • Age: 19
  • Date of birth: 23/01/2002
  • Current club: FC Volendam
  • Career: Ajax (Y), FC Utrecht (Y), FC Volendam
  • Position: Left Wing
  • Secondary position: Right Wing
  • Preferred foot: Right

Funnily enough I did a report on Telstar – FC Volendam last year as well and Ibrahim El Kadiri was the only player on Volendam’s side that started in both of the matches. I wasn’t very positive about the young winger and I can basically just copy and paste the report I made back then. El Kadiri didn’t play a very good match and got subbed of after an hour, just like last time.

The 5’7” tall winger looks fine technically is pretty agile, but just lacks physicality. He isn’t explosive enough to beat most opponents on the first meters and struggles in ground duels. El Kadiri played sixteen passes against Telstar, completed all of them, but only two of those passes were forward. He mostly played quite safe, near the sideline and just didn’t pose a very big threat. There was one moment where he beat his man and put in a good ball into the box, but the ball had just crossed the backline for a goal kick.

Rating – D
