Feyenoord – Match Report vs. FC Twente 20-09-2020

Feyenoord played a home match against FC Twente and were the favourites to win the match. However, they dropped points against a strong Twente who played aggressively and had a lot of bravery, especially in the opening of the match. An early goal by Vaclav Cerny after a beautiful back-heel assist by Danilo Pereira did not alert Feyenoord enough and they could have conceded more goals in the first half. Eventually they started to play better but they never played to their potential in the match. Steven Berghuis missed the first penalty but scored the second one which led to the game ending in 1-1.

Ratings

  • A1 – Very good, could play higher

  • B1 – Good, strong player at level
  • B2 – Potential to be strong player at level
  • C – Average for the level, rewatch
  • D – Below average in this match

Marcos Senesi

  • Nationality: Argentine
  • Age: 23
  • Date of birth: 10/5/1997
  • Current Club: Feyenoord
  • Career: San Lorenzo
  • Position: central defender
  • Preferred foot: left

Marcos Senesi – click on the link for a player report on him – played as a left central defender and formed a duo in defence with Eric Botteghin, until he got subbed off injured in the first half. Lutsharel Geertruida moved centrally and formed a defensive partnership with the Argentinian central defender. As always, the defender liked to defend proactively which led to him being on the opposition half quite a few times. Also, he often got into the duels with Brazilian striker Danilo Pereira but needed to back off sometimes as the Ajax loanee was smart in the duels and managed to keep possession often.

He often found himself in these situations but he did well to back off since he would get dragged out of position too much if he would have followed the Brazilian striker when putting pressure on Danilo Pereira. However, I do think that he could have been smarter in those duels. In the end of the first half, he lost a duel against him as well near his own box and Danilo Pereira nearly scored with his left foot. Marcos Senesi tried to rely on his body to hold him off but failed to do so as Pereira was faster than Senesi.

Marcos Senesi did get in front of Danilo Pereira sometimes as well and it definitely was not the case that he played badly. At once, he came in front of him and even joined the attack which was good to see. In possession, he often drifted wide to open up a passing lane and escape from the pressure but he mainly played sideways passes. He sometimes tried to play cross passes but was quite sloppy even though he completed two-third of his long balls. The Argentinian defender looked out of shape in this match and should improve in the next few matches.

Rating – B2

Based on this match, I can only give him a B2 rating. Feyenoord looked very bad in this match and Marcos Senesi looked bad as well. I hope that this is not going to be a structural thing and that he will play better in the next match.

Orkun Kökçü

  • Nationality: Turkish & Dutch
  • Age: 19
  • Date of birth: 29/12/2000
  • Current Club: Feyenoord
  • Career: Groningen Youth, Feyenoord Youth
  • Position: attacking midfielder
  • Secondary position: central midfielder
  • Preferred foot: right

Orkun Kökçü – click on the link for a player report on him – played as a left central midfielder but moved to the right side in the second half. He got subbed off after 78 minutes after a very disappointing performance in which he could not stand out for an average looking Feyenoord. The Turkish midfielder struggled to get his first touch right in this match, but did well to check his shoulders before receiving which allowed him to turn the right way, even though he did not get his touch right every time. Also, he occasionally rushed his pass forward as he was quite reactive towards the fans who were showing their unhappiness after Kökçü did not give a through pass, which he did quickly after he heard the fans shout.

Thanks to Orkun Kökçü Zerrouki got a yellow card in the first half after he got turned by the young midfielder. He tried to move into space between the lines quite a few times but was not found that often and did not do enough on the ball when he did get the ball in these situations. However, he opened up passing lanes at the right time which was a good thing but just needs to get found more often to really be decisive for Feyenoord. It does not help that he plays next to Mark Diemers who often goes for the risky through pass and is quite direct in his playing style, while Kökçü often likes to take it slower and wait for an opening.

The young midfielder still needs to improve on his defensive ability and especially his decision-making and positioning. He often gets dribbled past because he does not position himself well and his opponent can make him look slow in these situations. In the 11th minute, he tried to stop a counter from Twente but his tackle was too late and very unnecessary as he could not prevent Queensy Menig from getting past him and this led to Menig being able to cut inside and shoot on goal.

Rating – B2

A disappointing performance by Orkun Kökçü and a B2 rating is the best that I can give for this performance.

Lutsharel Geertruida

  • Nationality: Dutch
  • Age: 20
  • Date of birth: 18/07/2000
  • Current Club: Feyenoord
  • Career: Sparta Youth, Feyenoord Youth
  • Position: right-back
  • Secondary position: central defender
  • Preferred foot: right

Lutsharel Geertruida played as a right-back in the match against FC Twente until Eric Botteghin needed to be subbed off after he suffered an injury quite late in the first half. As a right-back, he did not make a good impression at all. He allowed Queensy Menig to cut inside a lot of times to his stronger right foot which got Feyenoord into trouble quite a few times. His body position indicated that he tried to force Menig out wide but this did not work out as Menig still managed to cut inside to his stronger right foot. He allowed Menig a shot on goal too often.

The young Dutch defender did well to stay narrow whenever the ball was on the other side of the pitch and would stay close to his direct opponent. He quickly reacted to runs in behind and was alert in these situations. His narrow positioning also allowed him to put pressure whenever the ball was played into a central area. From centre-back, Lutsharel Geertruida made a better impression as he anticipated well and played some good passes into midfield. He also closed gaps in behind well.

In possession, he made a shaky impression in the first half as he looked quite nervous but Feyenoord got awarded their first penalty after he made a good run in behind. However, I think he can do a lot better.

Rating – B2

I don’t really know what to say about his performance. He did alright as a central defender but was average as a right-back. I have watched him play often already but he’s quite inconsistent in my opinion and I’m not really sure on his potential yet.
