Monagas SC – Match Report vs. Carabobo FC 16/02/20

Héctor Maestre

  • Nationality: Venezuelan
  • Age: 19
  • Date of birth: 19/02/2001
  • Current Club: Monagas SC (L)
  • Career: Deportivo Lara (Y)
  • Position: central defender
  • Preferred foot: right

Héctor Maestre played as a left central defender and once again showed an impressive defensive performance. He covered the runs in behind well and he had a good body shape when he needed to defend with space in his back, which allowed him to react quickly to opponents making a run in behind. Maestre covered Brondani’s back well when he stepped out of the defensive line and Maestre made sure that the runs in behind of Carabobo’s striker when Brondani left the defence were not dangerous.

Maestre is very dominant in the aerial duels because he is determined to win the duels and always gives his all in aerial duels. He does not back off and is open to run through opponents. Besides that, his timing is quite good and he jumps relatively high. However, when there is no opponent in his way, he should definitely improve his defensive headers as he often loses possession whenever he can head the ball clear in all space and has the time to think about his pass.

He positioned himself well at crosses and managed to clear a lot of them. He positions himself in the passing lane and scans well to keep track of the opposites striker run in behind, which means that he is in a good position to clear the ball. Also, Maestre comes in front of his opponent well when a pass is played towards the striker. Furthermore, he does not often defend on the oppositions half, but when he did he did well to step out of the defensive line and anticipated very well. He saw that the pass was being played before it was played and timed his interception to perfection.

On the ball, he sometimes needed to be a bit more calm in my opinion. Especially when he recovered possession and his opponent put pressure on immediately, he sometimes just gets the ball clear instead of taking a touch and keep calm. Also, his passing technique with his left foot is not good enough for a higher level. His passes are accurate with his right foot and he needs to play as a right central defender in my opinion.

Rating: A1

Would be a perfect signing for Caracas or for midtable teams in the Colombian league at for example DIM, where they give a lot of youngsters the chance to prove themselves.

Ismael Romero

  • Nationality: Venezuelan
  • Age: 21
  • Date of birth: 02/03/1999
  • Current Club: Monagas SC
  • Career: Monagas SC (Y)
  • Position: right-back
  • Secondary position: left-back
  • Preferred foot: right

Ismael Romero played as a right-back once again and struggled very much in this fixture. He kept an eye out on the defensive structure well, but got dribbled past at times and got his team into trouble occasionally when he got dribbled past. He seemed uncomfortable on the ball, which was strange to see as he did well under pressure in the previous Monagas matches I watched. The bad conditions of the pitch could play it’s part in this though. He showed decent dribbling ability once again and had a very important interception in the second half when Carabobo had a threatening counter after a Monagas corner kick.

Rating: C

On this match, I would rate him as a C. However, based on the three matches I watched of him, it would be a B1.

Yorlen Cordero

  • Nationality: Venezuelan
  • Age: 18
  • Date of birth: 05/02/2002
  • Current Club: Monagas SC
  • Career: Monagas SC (Y)
  • Position: right-winger
  • Secondary position: left-winger and secondary striker
  • Preferred foot: right

Yorlen Cordero played as a striker but swapped positions often as he sometimes operated from the left or right side. He did well to have a lot of variation in his play. He dropped deeper to support the build-up, he drifted wide to attract the central defenders of Carabobo to create space and he also made some good runs in behind himself. He once again showed that he has very good acceleration and that he is able to change directions quickly. However, he lacks strength and I would like to see him play on the wing more often.

Rating: A2

As a winger, I could see him making it in a better league in South America.
