Match overview

CA Fenix won with 3-2 against Defensor Sporting. They played in a 4-3-3 formation with Ugarte as the defensive midfielder. Fenix left a lot of space between the lines as Ugarte tried to cut the passing lanes and Defensor Sporting were quite effective with playing a long pass to subsequently play the pass to the attacking midfielder in space. However, they did not get too dangerous by doing this and Fénix eventually won after scoring three times from either a corner or a free kick.

Manuel Ugarte played as the most defensive midfielder. His on the ball ability is outstanding and he excels in passing. Also, he reads the game very well in both the defensive and attacking area. The Uruguayan youngster has a very good technique, has a good first touch and plays out of pressure with ease. He uses his acceleration well to get past opponents or manages to find a gap between defenders to pass it to a teammate. He can be more active at times in the first phase of the build-up to provide an extra passing option, helping out the full-backs on their side of the pitch.

The goalkeeper did well to get quickly out of his goal which prevented Defensor Sporting from scoring a goal. He liked to play long passes towards the striker, who played as a targetman. These passes were often quite accurate. Casanova could not do much better at both goals and wasn’t at fault.

Roberto Fernández played as a right central midfielder and did well in both the defensive and attacking phase of play. He made a good run in the box early in the first half in which he kept very calm and composed as he used his body well to hold off the opponent and managed to find a teammate with a good backheel pass.

The midfielder showed that he has decent passing ability and he is able to play both good long and short passes. Ignacio Pereira played as a right winger, but often took up a more central position. He showed that he has a good ball control and that he is not scared to start a dribble. Sometimes he could get lost in his own dribbles which led to possession loss. He liked to cut inside when he received the ball in a wide position.

When he cut inside, he often would follow this up with a shot on target. Most of the times, he had a better option which he did not see. Pereira has good pace and managed to hold off his opponent well at times. Also, he liked to combine with his teammates in the tight spaces to create space to eventually fire a shot towards goal.

Rating: A2
