Ibrahim Sabra (Al-Wehdat) – Scout Report

Ibrahim Sabra is an 18-year-old Jordanian striker who plays for Al-Wehdat in the Jordanian Pro League. Sabra has already made a senior appearance for the Jordan national team and has scored prolifically for Jordan’s various youth teams. He’s a bit in and out of the Al-Wehdat lineup but I think he showed a lot of promise in AFC Champions League 2.

Sabra’s main exciting trait is that he is fast. I don’t know that the AFC Champions League 2 is necessarily full of elite athletes but Sabra stood out as significantly faster than just about every other player on the pitch in the games I watched. He’s on the short side being listed at 5’11 (1.82M) but he’s very sturdily built. The main way Sabra gets chances is via balls played in behind. His speed makes him a major threat and his relative strength means he can usually power past a defender that’s catching up to him. His lack of height, however, means that he is not that big of a threat in the air. I also thought that his movement when the opposition was in a low block was a bit static. Sabra’s dribbling is a little more sophisticated than just pushing the ball past defenders, though I wouldn’t say it stands out as a major strength. His close control is a little bit inconsistent and that means his dribbling is sometimes a bit janky. That means he sometimes has difficulty creating shots when he needs to beat a defender. If he could improve this area of his game he would be significantly more dangerous.

Sabra generally makes the correct passing decisions in transition but he’s not a great passer overall. He usually makes the correct decision but sometimes makes his teammates work too hard to control the ball. He also didn’t demonstrate the ability to break lines in the games I saw. His speed helps him out a lot defensively. He can close players down quickly. He is also good at capitalizing on moments of uncertainty, such as if the ball is bouncing or if a defender looks unsure about whether he should try to play or clear the ball into row Z.

Sabra is not the most well rounded player. But he’s got great pace and is creating shots consistently at a young age against reasonably good opposition. If he can add something to his game other than pace, either better dribbling or better off-the-ball movement inside the penalty area then I think he could play for a smaller team in Belgium or a league of similar level.

  1. I think you forgot to mention that in the U20 Asian Cup he was the top scorer of this tournament. I think you haven’t watched many of his matches because despite his short stature, he wins most of the aerial duels and he also scores a lot with his head. Also, what distinguishes the player the most is his movement behind the defenders and his movement, and he is very special in playing with both the right and left feet.
