Dylan Rose (Sydney United) – Scout Report

Dylan Rose is a 19-year-old defensive midfielder who plays for Sydney United in NPL New South Wales. Rose previously played for the reserves of A-League side Sydney FC but wasn’t given an A-League deal, despite strong performances.

Rose is listed at 5’9″ (1.82 m) and has a fairly average build. Rose is generally deployed as the deepest midfielder in a 4-3-3. Rose is a very strong ball-winner thanks to strong technique and defensive positioning. Rose is reasonably quick, at least by NPL standards, and that allows him to cover a lot of ground. He does, however, commit quite a lot of fouls. Sometimes this can be due to taking tactical fouls, but even accounting for that, he could get in card trouble with some referees.

Rose is also quite strong on the ball. He has a good range of passing, able to play long balls over the top or break the opposition press with shorter ground passes. Rose is quite press-resistant, very good at evading pressure with feints and through dribbling. However, he does sometimes hesitate a little bit too long to play a pass, and that can lead to a loss of possession, even if he can hold off pressure for quite some time. Rose is also quite a strong ball carrier, which can help him break through the first line of pressure and start counterattacks for his team. Rose’s final 3rd impact is fairly limited as he generally gets on the ball in quite deep areas. However, his strong passing and carrying suggest that, were he to play a little further forward, he might have the scope to have a bigger final 3rd impact.

Overall, I am pretty surprised that Sydney FC did not sign Rose to an A-League deal. He is extremely dominant defensively at the NPL level and quite strong in possession as well, though he has some room for improvement in the speed of his decision making. Another A-League club would make a lot of sense as a next step, or a move to a similar level in Europe to get his foot on the professional ladder would make sense.
