Luke Vickery (Marcarthur FC) – Scout Report

Luke Vickery is a 20-year-old winger who plays for Macarthur F.C. In the A-League. Vickery first started making A-League appearances in 24/25 with Western United. He joined Macarthur after financial troubles forced Western United to withdraw from the A-League. Vickery has played 4 times for Australia at youth level. He was born in the United States, which also makes him eligible for U.S citizenship.

Vickery is a tall and slender player, listed at 6’0″ (1.83 m). Vickery is sometimes listed as a striker, but he is always a touchline-hugging winger in practice. Vickery is quick with the ball at his feet and a strong carrier. Unfortunately, his dribbling and close control are not particularly good. He struggles to beat players 1v1, and his first touch often lets him down. However, he is quite good at receiving the ball in space in wide areas. So his success rate in running at defenders may not be very high, but he gets a lot of opportunities to do it. When Vickery is able to get into crossing positions, he is not the most clinical. He sends a lot of crosses right into opponents’ shins or fails to find a teammate with a cutback. But, again, he gets into those positions so frequently that he still gets a decent number of key passes. Vickery also does some arriving at the back-post, which means that he gets some decent shots of his own. He is relatively tall, and despite not being the strongest physically, he can get the better of smaller fullbacks. Ultimately, a career at a higher level than the A-League is going to rely on having better execution in the final third and developing literally any ability to beat players 1v1.

Vickery does track back a lot. His speed is helpful for closing players down, but it is rare to see him actually successfully dispossess someone. He has strong positional discipline in Macarthur’s 4-4-2 shape.

Luke Vickery is fast and good at getting into space to receive the ball. This creates a lot of opportunities to run at defenders in the final third. But, until he can start turning these opportunities into shots with more consistency, through stronger 1v1 ability and decision-making, the A-League is his level. His U.S. citizenship makes him a natural target for MLS teams if he can figure that out, but for now, he is a player to monitor rather than actively pursue.
