Lider Caceres (Atlético Tembetary) – Scout Report

Lider Caceres is a 20-year-old right back who plays for Atlético Tembetary in the Paraguayan league. He is a product of their youth setup and made his debut for the first team in the 2024 season when they were in the second division. In his first season, he made 30 appearances, helping them secure promotion back to the top flight. This season, he has been playing as a right back, though he spent the first half of the season as a center back. He recently represented Paraguay at the U-20 World Cup.

Caceres stands at 1.82 m (6’0″) with a lean physique. The Paraguayan is very quick over both short and longer distances, rarely being beaten for speed by opposing attackers. Despite his slim physique, he is deceptively strong in shoulder-to-shoulder duels. It is rare to see him be outmuscled or knocked off balance by an opponent when fighting for the ball, usually coming out on top. One concern with Caceres is his eagerness when going into challenges. He is overeager and rash at times, leading to him conceding silly fouls. Usually, it occurs in situations when his opponents are receiving possession with their backs to Caceres and he tries to intercept the pass or poke the ball away, but ends up going through the back of them instead.

In possession, Caceres is not heavily involved when his team builds up. He usually looks to push up high and wide near the touchline in these situations. Overall, his first touch is usually good, though he can occasionally take a heavy touch or the ball will bounce up on him. This is more noticeable in situations when he receives passes by the touchiline and is pressed. Caceres doesn’t do anything extraordinary in possession. He keeps it very simple, usually looking to find his winger with simple ground passes or long balls down the right channel for him to run onto. If he has space, he likes to carry forward into the final third. Caceres’ dribbling technique is decent, but he can sometimes take big touches. Rarely do you see Caceres involved in the attacking third, but he will occasionally overlap and look to put in crosses into the box if the opportunity arises. His technique is decent, but despite getting good curl and height, he doesn’t connect with teammates enough.

Caceres is a very good 1v1 defender. When facing attackers, he rarely bites at their moves and feints. Whenever he sees the right opportunity, Caceres looks to get his body between the ball and his opponent, shielding the ball and then recycling possession or looking to dribble forward. Combining this with his great strength and balance, opponents usually end up conceding possession to Caceres or fouling him in frustration. He shows good anticipation, reading opponents’ passes and through balls multiple times throughout matches. He does a good job of covering passing lanes and positioning himself to cut off crosses in the box. Overall, Caceres scans frequently when defending near his box, but he can occasionally forget to scan when defending crosses, though this is sporadic.

Despite starting his career as a center back, I would like to see Caceres continue playing as a right back. His ability in 1v1 duels, combined with his speed and strength, would make him a great fullback. I would like to see him improve in the final third, especially with his crossing and passing. Improving in his attacking qualities will make him a more balanced, versatile fullback. Making a move to one of the bigger teams in Paraguay would be a good test, especially if he can compete in Copa Libertadores or Copa Sudamericana and test himself against tougher opposition.
