Lucas Ronier is a 20-year-old right winger who plays for Coritiba in the second division of Brazil. While primarily operating off the right, he has also played off the left and as a central attacking midfielder. He made his debut for Coritiba in 2023 towards the end of the Brasileiro season. Since then, he has registered 13 goals and 6 assists in 75 appearances across all competitions.
Lucas Ronier stands at 1.65 m (5’6”) with a slim frame. He has explosive pace and agility. He is extremely quick over the first few yards and maintains his speed across longer distances. He is very agile, capable of changing directions very sharply and also able to accelerate and decelerate quickly. Even from standstill positions, his explosiveness makes him very hard to mark. However, his lack of physical strength limits his ability to fight through contact consistently in duels.
Ronier mainly operates as an inverted winger, always looking to cut inside. He is constantly looking to drive into space or link up with teammates. He maintains the ball close to his feet with his close control when dribbling, making it difficult to dispossess him, often forcing defenders to foul. Technically, he has a sharp first touch, rarely losing control. His ball-striking is good, capable of getting clean strikes around the the top of the box with good power. When dribbling, he typically favors cutting onto his left, though he is comfortable beating opponents either direction. He disguises his intentions through stop-start movements and body feints. His short and medium range passing is consistently strong, though occasional lapses in concentration lead to misplaced simple passes. He is capable of delivering effective crosses with both feet from either wing using inswinging and outswinging techniques. He shows good vision, capable of creating chances or playing dangerous passes in tight areas around the box. He usually looks for his fullbacks, either with a lobbed ball over the top or he will cut inside, acting as if he is going to shoot and then plays a disguised through ball, catching the back line off guard.
Off the ball, his work rate is very strong. When pressing, he does so with intensity and will sprint back to recover defensively whenever his team loses possession. It is common to see him drop very deep when his team is defending, appearing almost as a makeshift wingback. When defending, he is constantly scanning and communicating with teammates. He is very active on the defensive end, applying pressure and putting in tackles in the defensive third. When attacking, he will either drift into central areas or stick close to the touchline, but this usually depends on his teammates’ positioning.
Ronier has more than enough talent to play in the top flight of Brazilian football. There have been rumors of interest from multiple clubs in Brazil and Europe. I doubt he makes a move to a rival in Brazil, especially with the high possibility of Coritiba earning promotion this season. His next move would most likely be a direct move to Europe. A move to the Portuguese league or the Dutch league could be beneficial for the next step in his development.
