Zé Lucas (Sport Recife) – Scout Report

Zé Lucas is a promising young midfielder currently playing for Sport Recife in Brazil. Despite his youth, he has already accumulated significant first-team experience, racking up 517 minutes so far in the Brasileiro. He has also captained the Brazilian U-17 national team. Zé Lucas has earned a growing reputation for his intelligence, work rate, and strength in duels. His performances suggest he is not only adjusting well to the demands of senior-level football but may also be ready for a move to a more competitive environment in the near future.

Lucas stands at 1.74 m (5’9”). Physically, he possesses a solid and athletic physique. He displays excellent strength in duels. He demonstrates good core strength, constantly unbalancing opponents in shoulder-to-shoulder duels. He also shows the ability to hold off opponents, knowing how to use his body as a shield to protect the ball when being pressed. His speed and agility are two things that also stand out. He is quick to close down opponents when pressing, but also recovers quickly into position due to his pace. His stamina is also notable, consistently demonstrating the ability to cover a significant amount of ground in games. He displays good agility on the ball, showing he can turn quickly out of tight spaces when in possession. He also displays this in defensive duels, with his ability to shift his hips quickly when dealing with attackers.

In possession, Lucas displays a sharp passing technique both over short and longer distances. When his team is building out from the back, he is one of the two pivots in the midfield, or he drops into the backline to receive the ball. When playing in a double pivot, Lucas is usually the deeper of the two midfielders. For Sport Recife, he shoulders the responsibility of being the team’s main defensive coverage, but is also capable of helping link play. When playing in a midfield three, he has often played in a box-to-box role, moving into more advanced positions. He is comfortable receiving the ball in build-up due to his close control and ability to turn in tight spaces. He has also shown his ability to progress play through carrying the ball into the final third with his speed and close control, drawing fouls multiple times throughout the game.

Off the ball, Lucas stands out for his tactical intelligence and awareness. One of his main strengths is his movement off the ball. When his team builds out the back, he constantly looks for gaps to give his teammates a passing option. If not to receive, his movement helps create passing lanes for his other teammates to receive with space. When his team is in the attack, he will occasionally make late runs into the box to get onto the end of crosses. His main strengths are evident in his defensive work. He displays very good anticipation. With his strong positioning, he is constantly able to intercept opponents’ passes in the midfield third and cut out transitions. He also uses his legs very effectively to deflect or block passes. When pressing, he is very aggressive in closing down opponents, either forcing them back or to play long. However, it can lead to him being dragged out of position at times, but his speed allows him to recover.

Zé Lucas’ defensive skills combined with his strong technical and physical qualities make him a well-rounded young midfielder. Continued development in a competitive environment such as the Brazilian league for another 1-2 seasons should allow him to grow as a box-to-box or deep-lying midfielder capable of influencing games at a higher level. He is very capable of making the jump to a top 5 European league soon.
