Vincent Gomis is a 17-year-old goalkeeper who plays for Generation Foot and Senegal U-17.
Gomis has a typical goalkeeper’s build, he is around 6’1″ (1.85 m). Gomis is very strong when dealing with crosses. He is aggressive off of his line and is very frequently able to catch and hold crosses. His decision-making about when to come for crosses was on point, it was very rare to see him leave his line and fail to claim a cross. Gomis is also effective at coming off his line when opponents play balls in behind. He is quick over short distances which allows him to get to the ball first. Senegal did not give up very many shots on target in their games so I don’t have a full view of Gomis’ shot-stopping ability. However, he did not concede a goal from open play during the tournament and dealt with the few shots he did have well. His ability to hold and neutralise the ball is definitely a major plus. His size and speed coming off his line also make him effective in 1v1s.
Gomis is a very strong distributor of the ball both with his feet and his hands. Gomis can throw the ball a tremendous distance which allows him to start counter-attacks quickly for his team. Gomis has a strong passing range with his feet. This can help him to participate in build-up or pick out players in advanced positions with direct passes. Gomis’ one weakness on the ball is that he is not that comfortable under pressure. When he is pressed he is often forced into going long and giving the ball away.
It is hard to judge a goalkeeper based on four games, especially one who was not actually forced to make that many saves. But from what I saw in this tournament Gomis seems to have the skillset to go to a top-5 league. I would need to see more to make a firm assessment of his shot-stopping, but his control of his penalty area and his distribution are on a very high level.
