Dodo Dokou (Smouha SC) – Scout Report

Dodo Dokou is a 20-year-old Benin senior national that plays his club football for Smouha SC in the Egyptian Premier League. He can play both no. 6 and 8 roles, making 9 appearances in the league so far this season with 1 goal and 3 yellow card bookings. For Benin, he has 10 caps and a goal already.

Despite being slightly undersized (1.77 m) for a central midfielder, Dokou possesses a lean yet muscular frame that allows him to hold his own physically. His relentless energy and commitment to defensive actions are immediately noticeable, particularly when dueling or battling for loose balls. He aggressively pursues possession, often getting to the ball first but occasionally struggling with clean retention or arriving late in challenges, which has led to yellow card bookings. His tenacity in pressing and tracking back makes him a disruptive presence in midfield, and his ability to man-mark effectively denies opponents space between the lines. Dokou has excellent defensive instincts, reading passing lanes then anticipating distribution and stepping into those lanes for key interceptions. His closing speed and ability to apply pressure force rushed decisions from opponents, and he is willing to engage in physical tackles, though his technique at times results in fouls. In aerial duels, he competes well for his stature, demonstrating strong leaping ability, though he occasionally mistimes his efforts.

In possession, Dokou plays a pivotal role linking play from the base of midfield. He is composed under pressure, frequently utilizing quick, one-touch passing to retain possession and keep the ball circulating. His right foot is his dominant foot in distribution, delivering accurate ground passes and showing vision when switching play. His ability to scan prior to receiving allows him to execute progressive passes, though his weight and direction when attempting longer passes can be inconsistent. In attacking phases, he consistently makes trailing runs into dangerous areas, positioning himself for cutbacks and rebounds. His finishing, while ambitious, remains inconsistent, with some well-placed strikes but also moments of poor ball-striking technique. Dokou’s off-ball movement is intelligent, both in defensive transitions and attacking support. He is disciplined in maintaining his positioning in deeper midfield areas but also has the work rate to push forward in transition, arriving to the box late to provide an outlet. On set pieces, he moves well to lose markers and get into dangerous spaces, though he has struggled at times to make clean contact when finishing or challenging for headers.

Overall, Dokou is a high-energy, physically committed midfielder with strong defensive instincts and a developing range of passing. He has the traits to be a serviceable holding midfielder at the next level with his relentless pressing and ball-winning, but improvements in retention, discipline in challenges, and finishing consistency would elevate his impact further. With refinement in his ball-striking and decision-making in high-pressure situations, Dokou has the potential to be an influential box-to-box presence, too. The defensive-minded midfielder is youthful enough to hop continents and perform well in Slovakia or the second/third tier of France at current ability. His ceiling is dependent on whether he focuses on becoming a true ball-winner in midfield or adding a more technical ball-playing element to his skillset. From there, Dokou could become a bottom half Bundesliga/Premier League holding midfielder or a Ligue 1/Serie A box-to-box midfielder.
