Do-Young Yun is an 18-year-old South Korean winger who plays for Daejeon Hana Citizen in the K-League. Yun became a K-League regular in the second half of the just-finished season. He has played extensively for South Korea at various youth levels.
Do-Young Yun plays as a right-winger for Daejeon. He is left-footed but is quite comfortable using his right as well and generally plays as an old-school touchline-hugging winger. He is quite small, listed at 5’6 (1.73M) with a very slight build. Physicality is a bit of a concern in general for Yun, but he only turned 18 in October so this might improve as he matures. Yun is an effective zone mover on the wing. He has a strong first touch and carries the ball into space well. However, when dribbling against a defender he’s a bit lacking in speed and dynamism. Better dribbling would make Yun significantly better but at the moment he is too easily stopped in his tracks when he has to actually get past someone instead of just carrying the ball into open space. Yun is an effective passer, he’s good at finding the underlapping runner and passing the ball into the box. However, he does not directly assist teammates very often. I think improved dribbling would also help in this regard because it would allow him to get closer to the dangerous areas. Yun does not get that many shots, partly because Daejeon doesn’t get very many shots in general, but also because his limited dribbling means he can’t create separation often enough. He could also do a better job of making runs to the back post and potentially getting on the end of more passes from teammates.
Yun’s defensive play is very strong. He has a high work rate and is very good at digging the ball in contested situations, even though he is not the strongest physically. He also has a good sense of defensive positioning and can frequently intercept the ball or recover it if it’s loose.
Yun has quite a lot of limitations at the moment but I feel very positively about his long term potential. He is getting on the field and having a positive impact at a very young age in an extremely competitive league. The fact that his team is not very strong makes his performances all the more impressive. If the dribbling clicks and he matures a little bit physically then I think he could play for a smaller top-5 league team.
