Santiago Castaneda (Paderborn) – Scout Report

Written by António Silva.

Santiago Castañeda is a defensive midfielder who combines an impressive physical profile with solid technical abilities, making him an effective contributor in build-up play while ensuring defensive stability. Tall and lean, he exhibits decent agility for his stature and adequate motor mobility over both short and longer distances.

Castañeda is well-suited to operate as a lone pivot or within a double-pivot system. He consistently positions himself effectively to receive the ball, whether before or beyond the first line of pressure. Comfortable using both feet, he demonstrates good control and composure, often aiming to open up the field upon receiving the ball. When afforded space, he can turn efficiently and maintain fluidity in play. His first touch is generally reliable, allowing him to manage tight spaces effectively.

In possession, Castañeda shows an ability to attract pressure before releasing the ball, displaying intelligence and intent. He typically makes sound decisions, rarely losing possession, although his decision-making can become rushed and faulty when the tempo of the game increases. His passing range and precision are strengths, enabling him to execute both short and long passes. While he is primarily conservative/lateral in his distribution, he is capable of breaking lines with passes when the opportunity presents itself. Meanwhile, and although over open-field has decent control while carrying, his ability to carry the ball forward and break lines through dribbling or progressive runs is limited.

During attacking phases, Castañeda adopts a cautious approach, maintaining a balanced position to support the attack while ensuring defensive cover.

Defensively, Castañeda exhibits strong positional awareness and tactical intelligence. He steps up effectively to apply pressure, using his physical stature and long legs to intercept passes or regain possession. His positional awareness is particularly evident during defensive transitions, where he applies pressure to key exit points for the opposition, often recovering possession high up the field. Despite his physical presence, his assertiveness in one-on-one duels and challenges could improve. In aerial duels, he is competent, leveraging his height effectively.

During defensive transitions, Castañeda shows a good work ethic and commitment, tracking back to reorganize defensively. He possesses decent acceleration and top speed, allowing him to cover large spaces, though he is not yet dominant in managing wide-open areas.

Santiago Castañeda is enjoying another breakout season, this time in the 2. Bundesliga with Paderborn, following a standout campaign in the 3. Liga with Duisburg last year. Clearly, he is a highly talented defensive midfielder with the potential to excel at a higher level. In my view, while this season in the 2. Bundesliga represents a crucial step in his development, he could already make the leap to Germany’s top division as early as this January 2025. At his full potential, I believe he could become a good player for a Champions League-level team in one of Europe’s secondary leagues, such as Portugal or the Netherlands.
