Lautaro Millán is a 19-year-old central and attacking midfielder who plays for CA Independiente in Argentina. He came through the youth ranks of Independiente, working his way up before debuting for the first team of Independiente in 2024. He has played eight matches for Independiente thus far. Lautaro Millán is also a part of the Argentina U-20 squad, although he is also eligible to play for Chile. He has a contract until 31-12-2026 with a current market value of €350.000 (Transfermarkt).
Standing at around 1.69 meters with an average build, Lautaro Millán is on the smaller side for a central or attacking midfielder. He has mixed results in both shoulder-to-shoulder duels and duels with his back towards the goal. Millán occasionally gets pushed off the ball but also wins some duels due to his tenacity, aggressiveness and intelligence. He is quite quick on the first meters and has good on-the-ball acceleration. Millán displays above average speed over longer distances, although he sometimes lacks the pace and power to keep up with his opponent (such as Advincula at Boca). His quick feet, low centre of gravity and good footwork allow him to change directions quickly. His stamina is relatively impressive, especially because of his lack of playing time at senior level. Lautaro Millán covers spaces well when a teammate moves out of his position and cuts passing lanes well, mostly operating as one of the two strikers for Independiente out of possession.
In possession, Lautaro Millán often operates as the most advanced midfielder for Independiente. He mostly plays on the left side in a midfield three. The Argentinian midfielder displays good off-the-ball movement to find space between the lines (often in the left half-space) and out wide close to the touchline when the left-winger drops deep. His touches under pressure are slightly inconsistent but mostly good. Millán showcases mixed signs with his quick thinking under pressure as he occasionally is not aware of his surroundings and makes a poor decision under pressure as a result. However, the Argentinian midfielder’s occasional quick thinking is illustrated with good turns under pressure where he opens up his body well before carrying the ball into space. Millán displays good ball-carrying ability, as he generates decent speed with the ball, has good close control and draws fouls well. He is also effective in attacking 1v1s due to his quick feints, good changes of directions and close control. Millán is composed in attacking 1v1s but can be too casual in first phase possession.
He is quite passive on the ball when he operates in deeper areas. Millán misplaces and misweighs passes occasionally, especially under pressure. For Argentina U-20, he operated in a deeper role and acted more as a playmaker, a role he seemingly did not fit as he failed to progress the ball and break lines with his passing against Bolivia who played in a low-block. Lautaro Millán displays decent vision, although he is not super creative on the ball. He occasionally creates chances for teammates with good through passes. His delivery from set-pieces (he takes most corners) is decent to good, displaying good crossing technique but not always finding a teammate. Lautaro Millán’s off-the-ball movement in the box is excellent. He finds space in the box extremely well and gets plenty of scoring opportunities, although he has not yet managed to score for the first team of Independiente as his finishing has been quite poor. He often fails to connect with the ball properly.
Although Lautaro Millán’s physical profile is not the most interesting due to his lack of height and strength in physical duels, I believe his overall profile is quite interesting because he compensates for his lack of physique with his smart movement, effectiveness in attacking 1v1s and potential to become a regular goal scorer. Moreover, he has good ball-carrying ability and has the potential to become a chance creator from set-pieces. However, his mixed results with his quick decision-making under pressure, in transition (e.g. a 3v2 situation) and sporadic lack of awareness resulting in a poor touch as he turns the wrong way, are concerning. I believe Lautaro Millán has the potential to play for a lower-table team in La Liga.
