Medin Memeti (Melbourne City) – Scout Report

Medin Memeti is a 17-year-old Australian striker who plays for Melbourne City in the A-League. An injury crisis has thrust Memeti into a starting role unexpectedly and, so far, he has seized that opportunity with both hands. Memeti has played four times for Australia at U-19 level.

Memeti is listed as 5’10 (1.78M). By the standards of 17-year-olds, he is sturdily built. Memeti is not physically dominant at this stage but he holds his own and for a 17-year-old that’s impressive. Defenders can knock him off the ball but it’s usually a struggle for them. Memeti is a fairly strong jumper but his medium height means he sometimes struggles with contested aerial duels. But what really makes him stand out is that he has been a box-shot machine in his professional minutes so far. This is achieved through a mixture of off-the-ball movement and using his physical traits to snatch on loose balls. Memeti pops up unmarked in the box at a shockingly high rate. His shot locations are all excellent, almost all of his shots so far have been high xG chances.

Memeti has a high level of flair and unpredictability in his shooting. Examples of this are backheeled shots and flicking the ball over an on-rushing keeper with the outside of his boot. Memeti has demonstrated a decent level of on-the-ball technical skill. He is not a player who is always going to run at defenders but in transition, he has enough dribbling ability to beat an isolated defender. His decision-making in transition also seems fairly strong. He is good at finding the open man when his side has numerical superiority in the final 3rd. Memeti does not stand out on the defensive side of things. But he has some physical traits that could lead to him being an effective defender. This may be something that improves as he gets older.

It’s extremely early in Memeti’s professional career. He has only started two games so far, so clubs tracking him should wait for a sustained period of this performance before making a move. But what he has done in those minutes looks absolutely incredible. If he can keep this up over the course of a full A-League season then I think the big clubs in Europe should be looking to snag him when he turns 18. Bayern Munich have been quite active in Australia in recent years and Memeti’s early returns make him the type of player they might be interested in.  He, of course, would need quite a bit of development before he could take the field for a club like Bayern. There would be a few years of playing reserve football and on loan.
