Mateo Silvetti (Newell’s Old Boys) – Scout Report

Mateo Silvetti is an 18-year-old winger who plays for Newell’s Old Boys in the Argentinian Liga Profesional. Silvetti came through Newell’s Old Boys’s youth academy. He made his debut for the Argentinian side this year and has already played 19 matches for the first team of Newell’s Old Boys. Mateo Silvetti has mainly played as a right-winger for Newell’s Old Boys, while he played as a left-winger for Argentina U-20 in their friendly games.

Standing at 1.75 meters with an average build, Mateo Silvetti displays inconsistent strength in physical duels. The Argentinian winger sometimes shields the ball well and displays decent strength in duels with his back towards the goal, but he also loses his balance quite easily at times. He occasionally draws fouls well. Mateo Silvetti displays good acceleration on the first meters and above average speed over longer distances, although he lacks top speed over longer distances. He changes directions and shifts his body weight very quickly. Silvetti does not shy away from contesting an aerial duel, although he is not overly effective in aerial duels. Off the ball, Mateo Silvetti is quite tenacious and plays with high intensity. He tracks back well after losing possession and displays good work-rate and stamina.

Mostly operating on the right for Newell’s Old Boys, Mateo Silvetti often provides width for the Argentinian side although he also likes to roam around the pitch at times. He displays decent variation between coming short and attacking the space in behind. The winger sometimes creates space for his teammate with smart movements. For example, he occasionally drops deep to create space for the overlapping right-back. Silvetti’s first touch is inconsistent and sometimes sloppy, especially when he receives the ball under pressure down the touchline. His short passing is quite average as he is sometimes sloppy on the ball. He likes to attempt backheel passes, showcasing his flair on the ball. His close control in tight spaces is also inconsistent, although he has shown glimpses of good close control and trickery in tight spaces. Although not very creative with his passing, Silvetti has sporadically displayed his nice through passing technique.

The Argentinian winger likes to take on his opponents. With his quick changes of directions, he is sometimes effective in attacking 1v1s. However, he generally tends to struggle in attacking 1v1s as he is quite predictable despite trying to dribble past his opponents on both the in- and outside. Silvetti also lacks the top speed to create separation from his opponent and loses the ball too easily sometimes. The 18-year-old is yet to assist a goal for Newell’s Old Boys, although his crossing technique is good. Most of his crosses are defended, but he has the potential to be a lot more dangerous with his crossing, especially his in-swinging crosses from deep with his weaker left foot. He can cross the ball into the box with both feet. Mateo Silvetti displays good anticipation and positioning in the box to get on the end of crosses and passes to score, which he has shown a few times in the Liga Profesional. He also recently showed that he strikes the ball well from distance with both feet, scoring from outside the box with his weaker left foot.

His inconsistent technique and lack of attacking 1v1 ability are quite concerning, although he will get better and more consistent as he gains experience at this level. His ball-striking with both feet and anticipation in the box are a huge asset to have as a winger as he is likely to score many goals in his career. Mateo Silvetti needs to stay in Argentina for two more years before he can potentially transfer to a lower-table team in La Liga.
