Pedro Vite (Vancouver Whitecaps) – Scout Report

Pedro Vite is a 22-year-old midfielder who plays for the Vancouver Whitecaps in MLS. Vite joined Vancouver from Independiente Del Valle in 2021 and after some strong seasons has been the persistent subject of transfer rumours.

Vite is a deep-lying playmaker. The primary thing that makes him attractive is his ability to drop deep, receive the ball, and then play a progressive pass. Vite has great vision, can break lines, and has an excellent range of passing. However, he is not the most ball-secure. He sometimes dwells and the ball too long and, although his passing is incredibly strong overall, occasionally makes a slightly baffling decision. Vite’s vision can be an asset in the final 3rd. But because he drops so deep and does not get a lot of shots inside the box areas he’s generally better suited to a deeper role. He might personally score more in an advanced role but the team will score more with Vite in a deeper position. He’s not really a dribbler, he almost exclusively progresses the ball through passing.

Vite’s defensive play has improved significantly since joining Vancouver. He is not necessarily the most technical defender but he puts in a lot of effort. Vite is deceptively quick and can cover a lot of ground and make recovery runs effectively. This speed can also be effective in counter-attacking situations. He is small and slight, 5’7 and 132 pounds, but his tenaciousness allows him to hold his own in physical battles. I wouldn’t play him as a #6 but he has demonstrated this season that he is perfectly capable in a double pivot as long as he is paired with someone who is also defensively sound.

Vite has consistently been linked with a move to an unnamed team in either Scotland or Belgium. Realistically there are about 6 clubs across these two leagues who could conceivably afford him (Celtic, Rangers, Gent, Genk, Anderlecht, Brugge). I think Vite could be an effective player for those clubs but I don’t think he would be that likely to take another step beyond a club like that. His age could certainly make him worthwhile, as he would be a strong player at that level for a long time. But he’s not likely to lead to a big return on investment.
