Report:
Standing at 1.81m with a slightly slim build, João Pedro Chermont displays decent but not great strength in physical duels. He occasionally struggles in shoulder-to-shoulder duels or duels with his back towards the goal. JP Chermont has a decent burst of speed and displays above average speed over longer distances. He has decent stamina but sometimes cramps up late in the game. The Brazilian right-back has decent jumping reach in aerial duels, but has mixed results in aerial duels due to his lack of strength at times.
The right-back often operates as a winger for Santos in possession, but can also get involved in first-phase possession. JP Chermont has a good touch under pressure, often keeping the ball close to him and looking clean on the ball. The Brazilian youngster displays good footwork in tight spaces, being capable of having a good touch and quickly passing it to a teammate. His passing technique over both short and longer distances is very smooth. Although he is occasionally sloppy on the ball, JP Chermont manages to find his teammates sometimes through tight gaps. He can play one-touch football under pressure, progressing the ball through one-two’s.
JP Chermont looks quite good operating in the final third too. The Brazilian right-back often makes overlapping runs and uses the space quite well. He displays good crossing technique but can also put in very good cut-backs. JP Chermont prefers to put in cut-backs or low crosses, with almost every cross being a dangerous one. The youngster is very composed on the ball in tight spaces, using good ball manipulation and close control to dribble past his opponent. He can both go on the in- and outside, being capable of striking the ball well with his weaker left foot after cutting inside. The 18-year-old right-back displays good ball-carrying ability and has decent vision, sometimes spotting runners in behind and finding them with good through passes.
Defensively, there is some room for improvement for JP Chermont, although he is definitely not a bad defender. JP Chermont mostly struggles in defensive 1v1s on the wing, often not having an optimal starting position and body shape, meaning that he can get dribbled past quite easily, especially against explosive wingers. JP Chermont’s timing in defensive 1v1s can also be worked on. He reads the game quite well, especially higher up the pitch, as he intercepts quite some passes. JP Chermont deals with crosses and cut-backs from the opposite wing well, consistently scanning where his opponent is and positioning himself well. The 18-year-old displays a lot of courage trying to block shots and seemingly being willing to put his body on the line to prevent goals.
JP Chermont is quite an exciting talent coming through Santos’s youth academy. The right-back needs to work on his defensive skills but already shows a lot of promise going forward. His next move would probably be The Netherlands or Portugal, probably starting for the reserves team before being considered as a first-team squad member.
