Report:
Luis Diaz stands at around 1.83m with a strong build. He generates a lot of power from his legs and body, allowing him to physically bully opponents in duels both offensively and defensively. Diaz uses his body very efficiently in duels and is quite strong in duels with his back towards the goal. He is very athletic and flexible. Diaz has a good burst of speed and is very quick over longer distances. He changes directions quickly. Diaz displays good jumping reach and timing in aerial duels, also using his body efficiently.
He has mainly played as a right-winger for Envigado but has also made some minutes as a striker, where he reaches his best level and potential. Luis Díaz strikes the ball with a lot of power with his right foot but does not always connect with the ball well as he can strike the ball off-balance. He has the same issue when shooting with his left foot. Diaz has decent ball-striking with his left foot. He can finish 1v1s against the goalkeeper with both feet but has mixed results, sometimes not directing his shot towards one of the corners and aiming his effort straight at the goalkeeper. Diaz has a knack for getting into the right space at the right time, displaying his good off-the-ball movement in the box. Even though his heading technique is not always great, when he does connect well with the ball he heads the ball with a lot of power, although he does not always manage to beat the goalkeeper. Diaz also sometimes goes for an acrobatic attempt. He is an offensive threat in set-pieces.
Luis Diaz often provides width for Envigado in possession but he can also take up an inverted position. Receiving with his back towards the goal, Diaz looks composed but not willing to take many risks, often taking a touch and passing the ball backwards. His passing over short distances are clean in general, although he can sometimes be a bit sloppy with his tight passing under pressure. Diaz has a decent but not great touch under pressure. He does well to move into space between the lines. Diaz uses both feet to dribble, showcasing his decent but not great close control and generating quite some speed with his ball-carrying, although he sometimes loses control over the ball while dribbling at speed. He likes to cut back to his weaker left foot on the right wing, displaying inconsistent timing and not always winning the duel. Diaz uses his body efficiently to hold off opponents in shoulder-to-shoulder duels. His decision-making in the final third is not always great, sometimes going for his own success when a teammate is in a better position. His final ball can be a bit sloppy, too.
Generally, I think Luis Diaz is wasted out wide at Envigado. He has shown plenty of characteristics that indicate he is a striker and not a winger. Diaz has a knack for space in the box, is a decent but not great finisher, receives well with his back towards the goal, can move into space between the lines and is a decent but not great ball-carrier. I think he could be an interesting option for Belgian clubs in the near future.
