Dominik Szala (Gornik Zabrze) – Scout Report

Dominik Szala is an exciting 17-year-old prospect from Gornik Zabrze, who play in the Polish Ekstraklasa. The player, who himself is Polish plays as a center back, mostly the right center back. Szala is around 185 centimeters tall and is right footed. He rarely uses his left foot, only for middle to short distance passes and while not being pressed by an opponent. Dominik Szala played at the U17 World Cup in Indonesia but struggled to perform like the whole Polish squad due to a scandal that had weakend the side. This is his debut season in the first team, and until now he only played 7 games.

Szala has an mesomorphic body build. But he slightly lacks strength in duels, as he’s still a bit lacking in them. But as a 17-year-old, switching from the lower divisions with the B-team to the top is physically a big switch. Because of that, he often fouls his opponent. Same can be told for aerial duels. His heading abilities when he isn’t in a duel or covered are pretty good. He can give a good pass or clear the ball with his head. But when he’s in a duel it’s way worse. His heading abilities are well though. His acceleration and pace are decent, good enough for a center back. His turning speed is way better though. His fitness is decent as he moves a lot without the ball, but at the end of some games you could see that he’s tired. Talkative on the field, pointing to open space or opponents with his arms.

Szala shows good potential defensively, but he still has some work to do. His defensive abilities are pretty good. If needed he can time a good, hard sliding, puts his foot at the right times to poke or intercept the ball away from an opponent, times his rushes forward to press an opponent good too. He likes to do the last matter a lot, but often it takes him out of position which could be a struggle. Definitely as he’s not yet very good in duels. But it might be a tactic as well. As the defenders often position themselves in 3 defenders looking position. But because of the matter his positioning is a bit weird at moments, not particularly bad though. Szala often tries to block shots, and he’s doing that well. He often stays deep behind, almost like if he’s the last man to beat. Also, during corners offensively he prefers to stay behind in the defense.

He doesn’t show a lot offensively, but there is still a bit that needs to be talked about. His short passing is pretty good, but he made an error with a pass that ended up in a goal. But overall, his short passing is pretty good. His long passing is decent, but his consistency in it needs to be improved. Sometimes the ball lands near a teammate and the other time it’s just not near him. Has pretty good ball control, remains calm when pressed and even can make a dribble past his opponent. His first touch is a bit unreliable sometimes, as the ball bounces too hard of his foot or just gets a weird touch to it. It could be dangerous because you’re the last defender.

He shouldn’t leave the Polish league right now. He needs playing minutes with the big guys, and he starts to get it right now. He started the last 5 games and played the full 90 minutes. He club also struggles financially, so it’s not that they’re able to get a replacement in his spot. But maybe next summer, he could be on the move to a better league. But right now he shouldn’t even think about a transfer. He’s in a good position and he gets playing time, so he should focus on improving.
