Max Williamsen is a 20 year old Norwegian Centre back who currently plays for Kristiansund in Norway. WIlliamsen made his first team debut in the past year however, spent some time away on loan to gain first team experience at lower league side Levanger, also in Norway.
Physically, Williamsen is a big presence at the back standing at 191cm. The Norwegian is particularly strong at dealing with aerial battles and his tall frame certainly helps with this as well as his ability to tower over his opposition when in aerial duels. Williamsen has a slim frame which could do with some development in the gym in order to provide him with the extra strength needed to shrug off a bigger forward from the opposition.
The ball playing defender displays some natural technical ability and is very composed on the ball. He is able to receive the ball well, hold onto possession and then provide strong short and long range passes. Although Williamsen is more right footed, he also looks to use his left foot where possible. In the modern game, this is a good trait to develop and supports the case of him being composed on the ball, as he is not limiting himself to one foot. Williamsen is great at scanning his surroundings and picking out threats which he will look to defuse.
Tactically, the centre back is able to recognise danger and make timing interceptions to protect his backline. He does like to come out with the ball from centre back and take it into the midfield before releasing and setting the team on the attack. He does show intelligence in dropping deeper to receive the ball so he has an extra few seconds before passing it off to a teammate. However, there are occasions when he can be dragged out of position when the opposition are on the attack and not always being tight on his opposition forward which can lead to defensive errors.
Williamsen is a commanding centre back who is vocal with his teammates and likes to organise the defence. He is a calm defender who does not show much aggression and also displays this when on the ball as much as off the ball. He does display a good attitude on the pitch and shows his workrate.
Overall, Williamsen does have the qualities to improve and be developed into a good technical defender. However, he does need to develop in some areas most notably working on his frame in the gym and improving the tactical side of the game particularly with his man marking and ensuring he does not get dragged out of position. Williamsen has played as a central defensive midfielder for his club which actually suits him better. By playing as a defensive midfielder, he is able to make up for any downfalls that he is currently displaying as a centre back and his technical ability would allow him to slot into this position better. In fact, this would provide an extra layer of protection of the backline and even slot in as a half back if required.
