GIZO MAMAGEISHVILI (FC Saburtalo) – SCOUT REPORT

Gizo Mamageishvili, is a talented 21-year-old attacking midfielder from Georgia who currently plays in the highest Georgian division for FC Saburtalo in Tbilisi. He started out in the Georgian Football Federation academy, moving to the Saburtalo Academy in the summer of 2021 together with his twin brother Otar who plays as a CM/CDM. After coming on as a sub for the majority of 2022, the 2023 season was his breakthrough season playing for the first team starting in 27 of the 36 matches in the Erovnuli Liga. Next to that, he played his first international minutes in the Conference League. Mamageishvili mostly plays as an attacking midfielder and is also frequently positioned as a right winger.

Physically, Mamageishvili stands at 1.81 meters tall and has an athletic build that complements his playing style. His most prominent attributes are his speed and aggressiveness, allowing him to cover ground swiftly and execute timely interceptions. He exhibits excellent stamina, sustaining a high level of intensity throughout matches, although he oftentimes does not play the full 90 minutes. His great physical treats are complemented by a good understanding of the game, which is particularly evident in his positional awareness.

In offense, he displays a keen sense of spatial orientation, making intelligent off-the-ball runs in space to exploit or create gaps in the opposition’s defense. Out of possession Mamageishvili is a valuable asset in pressing the opponent’s buildup with his speed and insight. Technically, Mamageishvili demonstrates proficiency in passing, displaying a good vision to find forward options by closely observing his teammates’ movements. He showcases a reliable first touch and delivers great crosses when he gets in that position, contributing effectively to his team’s attacking actions. Despite his technical skills and ability to keep close control in small spaces, his dribbling can oftentimes be characterized as wild, occasionally resulting in unnecessary loss of possession. Similarly, his shooting lacks some refinement, often opting for ambitious attempts from challenging angles resulting in needless loss of possession due to blocked or wide shots.

Mamageishvili has an aggressive playing style which is characterized by his relentless pursuit of every ball on the field including supporting his team defensively. His tenacity and willingness to engage in physical battles contribute significantly to his team’s defensive solidity and press. However, this aggressive approach occasionally leads to disciplinary issues, which resulted in an “impressive” 11 yellow cards in 29 appearances this season. Nevertheless, his determination to succeed and willingness to make (backward) runs is a testament to his drive and will to win.

Gizo Mamageishvili emerges as a dynamic midfielder with substantial potential for further development. He can definitely improve by refining his dribbling and controlling his aggressiveness to mitigate unnecessary disciplinary actions. But his attributes in speed, aggressiveness, and movements off the ball are commendable, and make him an interesting player for the future. I think it would be good for him to play in the Erovnuli Liga for one more season before moving to a mid-table team in Belgium or Netherlands. Where a role as right attacking midfielder in a 4-4-2 formation could be a great match. As this would allow him to exploit his strong passing, speed and forward runs.
