Report:

Luciano Rodriguez stands at 1.79m with a strong build. He displays decent strength in duels with his back towards the goal, although he does not always use his body efficiently in physical duels. Rodriguez displays good strength in shoulder-to-shoulder duels. He has good jumping reach and decent timing in aerial duels, being capable of winning many aerial duels in the box. Rodriguez has a good burst and displays good speed over longer distances. He does not seem that explosive changing directions but is definitely not slow on the turn either.

Having played as a left-winger, right-winger and striker, Luciano Rodriguez is a versatile attacker. I think he excels in the striker position. His ball-striking is his biggest asset. Rodriguez strikes the ball with a lot of power and regularly scores from distance. He occasionally rushes his attempt or has an average shot location. His ball-striking with his weaker left foot is decent but not great. His shots sometimes lack accuracy. Rodriguez’s 1v1 finishing is decent although he does not very often get into these situations. He is capable of scoring from tight angles, but against stronger goalkeepers, he would likely not score some of the goals he scored for Liverpool Montevideo.

Rodriguez has good crossing technique from the right-wing, often creating danger with his crossing. He puts his crosses into good areas. Rodriguez can also play good cut-backs into the box but it must be said that he has a lot of space and time to play those. He displays good vision as he spots runners in behind well but the execution of his through passes is quite average. Rodriguez often does not put the right weight on his through passes. As a striker, he often manages to find space between the lines well. He links up play well with his teammates although he can sporadically be sloppy with his left-footed passing.

Rodriguez has a good but slightly inconsistent first touch. However, he sometimes does not turn the right way under pressure as he fails to scan before receiving the ball. His dribbling ability is what he can improve the most on. Rodriguez does not really have an individual action and relies on his strength and speed to dribble past opponents. He often dribbles into congested areas and makes the wrong decisions on the ball, especially when he is put under pressure by more than one opponent. Rodriguez also takes too many risks in front of his own goal. He mostly tries to cut away from his opponent in attacking 1v1s but has mixed results as it’s often too obvious. Rodriguez has decent but not great close control. He sometimes seems to have to slow down while dribbling to maintain control.

Luciano Rodriguez has some specific qualities that could make him an interesting target for many clubs. Due to his lack of dribbling ability, I think he is more suited to the striker role, also because of his great ball-striking, good aerial ability, strength on the ball and link-up play. His next step should be a stepping stone club such as Club Brugge, Feyenoord or even Palmeiras or Flamengo.
