Faniel Tewelde is a 17 year old Norwegian winger who currently plays for Odds BK in Norway. Tewelde made his debut at the age of 16 in October 2022.
In terms of his physical presence, Tewelde has a slim build and stands at 178cm. He has shown some glimpses of having strength in his legs by managing to hold off the opposition however, he could do with improving his strength in regards to his upper body in order to shrug off any opponents in shoulder-to-shoulder duels. The Norwegian possesses a great amount of speed which he demonstrates in short bursts and sprinting over a longer distance to accelerate away from his opposition.
The 17 year old is technically gifted and does carry the ball exceptionally well additionally he is very skilful and frequently shows his flair. Tewelde has a decent first touch and has great ability to bring the ball under control, he is also able to use his dribbling skills to skip past his opponent or to quickly change direction. However, Tewelde can get complacent at times and give the ball away to the opposition when attempting a pass forward or attempting to dribble through the opposition defence when it is clearly too crowded.
Tactically, the Norwegian has been playing as a lone striker and he has struggled to make much of an impact as his natural movement is to drift out to the left side of the field. Tewelde’s best position is on the left wing and cutting in on his right foot where he is able to make much more of a positive impact. The youngster needs to improve his game intelligence but this should develop as he gets more game time and continues to play at a higher standard. We do need to remember he is only 17 and is a starting 11 player for Odds BK.
Tewelde is someone who works hard for his team and tracks back often. Utilising his pace, he is able to press and close down his opposition at a quicker rate which does disturb the flow of the opposition. He does display great determination on the pitch which is a promising sign that he would also put in the hard yards when it comes to training and development work off the pitch.
Overall, Tewelde shows great promise and if developed correctly could become a big name for Norway in the future. He currently does not suit the playing style of his current team as they are defensively minded, drop deeper and the opposition hold more possession.
Faniel Tewelde is an impact player and shines in moments in the game. He has scored five goals in 20 games which is impressive considering his age and the team style of play. It is my belief that he should look to move to a club in Europe which has great facilities and that can work to develop him such as RB Salzburg, Anderlecht or FC Nordsjælland.
