Semeu Commey (CD Trofense) – Scout Report

Semeu Commey is a 19-year-old central defender currently playing in Portugal’s third tier for CD Trofense. Commey primarily operates as a centre-back in a back four. He can operate as the right-sided centre-back but mostly plays as the left-sided central defender as his team utilises a 4-3-3 or a 4-2-3-1 system. He will look to play in the half-space quite frequently, this allows him to cover when the fullback attacks down the flank.

The Ghanaian centre-back is right-footed and stands at 190 cm tall. His frame is quite athletic, a little on the lean side although he is very physically strong and is someone who thrives in 1v1 defensive duels. He frequently uses his short burst of acceleration which is important when making recovery runs and providing defensive cover. His speed is particularly useful in the defensive transition when his team are caught on the counter. Additionally, Commey’s superb aerial prowess means he is a threat at both ends of the pitch from set pieces. His sound defensive positioning and good physical strength mean he can battle in the aerial duels defensively and he can provide an attacking threat due to his heading abilities.

He is a very intelligent player who knows how to provide solid defensive cover, especially in transition whilst the team tries to regain its defensive shape. Commey appears to be very decisive and makes sound choices when covering. He very rarely goes to ground, preferring to utilise his body shape and orientation to cut off the opposition’s passing lanes. The 19-year-old’s defensive positioning is excellent, he can read the game well, making important interceptions and blocks to limit the opposition’s attacking opportunities. Out of possession, Commey likes to stick closely to his opponent. Most of the time, this is effective as it puts his opponent under pressure, often forcing them backwards. However, sometimes this does lead to him being spun by the opposition player which leaves space in behind the defensive line.

When in possession, Commey is calm and composed. He possesses an excellent passing range which he is not afraid to use. He likes to initiate attacks via long-range passes over the top of the opposition’s defence. Furthermore, he is more than capable of playing it short as he has good vision and passing technique to play intricate threaded passes in the central areas. He uses his passing abilities to play out of defence and although he doesn’t carry the ball forward too often, he is capable of progressing the ball out of defence if required.

The 19-year-old possesses all the qualities required to play at the highest level in the future. Most likely, a move to Portugal’s top tier will be on the cards soon. The young central defender is certainly one to watch out for in the future.
