Marco Angulo is a 20-year-old defensive midfielder who is having his breakthrough season at Independiente del Valle. After William Pacho, Patrickson Delgado and Joel Ordóñez, he is another Independiente del Valle youth product who will be looking to make a move to the BeNeLux. Angulo is currently a regular starter for the Ecuadorians, but there is a lot of rotation at the moment as manager Anselmi is yet to find his ideal starting eleven. The midfielder has an incredible explosiveness on the ball and has a great technique too.
Physically, Angulo is that much of a physical presence standing at 1.80 meters with a lean build. He has very smooth movement and is very quick on the first meters. His turns of speed are excellent and he is can maintain his speed over longer distances. Angulo is very agile and quick on the turn. The Ecuadorian midfielder needs to improve his intensity and his stamina, as he does not seem capable of playing with a high intensity for 90 minutes. Angulo sometimes loses important ground duels in midfield because of his lack of physical strength. However, his tenacity, aggressiveness and smart positioning often make up for his lack of strength.
The Ecuadorian midfielder has a very good technique. He is trusted with an important role in the build-up and often receives passes while being marked by an opponent. Angulo is capable of turning away quickly from his opponent, as he has great ball control and receiving skills to turn away from his opponent. He moves into the right positions at the right time and is a very smart player in possession. Angulo is a good ball progressor, especially with his good runs on the ball in the first phase of the build-up, using his great athleticism and speed. His short and long passes can sometimes be a bit sloppy, also because he often tries risky passes, but Angulo’s passing technique is good and it is likely that he will improve a lot in this aspect. Angulo is great in the small spaces and very press-resistant.
Marco Angulo would fit well in a dominant, attacking-minded style of play in Belgium or The Netherlands. Because of the non-EU regulations, it is unlikely that he would move to The Netherlands as his wages would be expensive, but I think that Marco Angulo would be a perfect signing in terms of level for AZ. He would be a good back-up for Jordy Clasie. He needs to improve his stamina and intensity, but has the potential to play in the top 5 leagues if he manages to develop those aspects. So, if his wages would be in line with his current and potential ability, I would love to see him at AZ.
Surely he’s not earning so much that a move to a dutch team would be expensive? Del Valle aren’t a rich club either so I doubt they’re paying a youngster big money
